South Africa thrashed Tanzania 27-0 in Johannesburg to move within touching distance of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Women's African Championships title.

Seven goals from Dirkie Chamberlain were added to by double hat-tricks from Lilian du Plessis, hat-tricks from Toni Marks and Bernadette Coston, braces from Jade Mayne and Shelley Russell, and a goal apiece for Candice Manuel, Tanya Britz, Tarryn Bright and Illse Davids as the hosts made it five wins out of five and stretched their scoring tally to 65 without reply.

South Africa now go into their final round-robin match against Ghana on Sunday (November 1) knowing that a draw will be enough to secure them the continental title and a place at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Ghana had a 100 per cent record going into their clash with Kenya earlier in the day but it took a 55th minute equaliser from Theresa Mills to earn them a point.

Elizabeth Opoku and Nafisatu Umaru put Ghana into the lead at 1-0 and 2-1 respectively, but Kenya’s Teresa Nekesa Juma and Tracy Karanja both conjured up equalisers before team-mate Audrey Omaido gave them a 3-2 advantage, only for it to be cancelled out by Mills two minutes later.

In the first match of the day, goals from Jenna Palmer and Michelle Williams earned Zimbabwe a 2-1 victory against Nigeria, who got themselves on the scoresheet through Eleho Ovo.

Nigeria face Kenya in their sixth and final game, while Tanzania go up against Namibia.

Meanwhile in the men’s competition, Tanzania beat Botswana 3-1 to set up an seventh-place playoff against Namibia on Sunday.

Deep Visran and Sultan Issa put them 2-0 ahead and although Eddie Ngara halved the deficit, the win was sealed in the 55th minute by Castro Mayuma.
