Cuba’s Omara Durand broke her own 100m T12 world record today to become the third athlete to seal a gold medal hat-trick at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships in Doha.

The 23-year-old, who has already broken world records en route to winning 200m and 400m titles this week, cruised home in 11.48 seconds in the category for athletes with with visual impairments.

This was 0.17 faster than her previous best set at August’s Parapan American Games in Toronto.

“I have won three gold medals, I am the happiest in the world," the delighted winner said afterwards.

"Three is the magic number!”

Azerbaijan’s Elena Chebanu finished in a distant second place in 11.94 while Ukraine’s Oxana Boturchuk took bronze in 11.96.

China’s Cuiqing Liu was another to claim a third gold medal, celebrating her 24th birthday in style by claiming the 100m T11 title in 11.43 to add to her 200m and 400m crowns.

Behind her there was a double Brazilian presence on the podium as Jerusa Geber Santos took silver in 12.57 and Jhulia Santos bronze in 12.79.

Tunisia's Walid Ktila, meanwhile, is still on course to go one step better, having added 100m T34 gold to his 400m and 800m victories, with the 200m still to come.

He won in 15.75 to beat United Arab Emirates Mohamed Hammadi, who clocked 15.92 for second place.

Elsewhere on the track, there was a British clean sweep of the podium in the 800m T34, with London 2012 champion Hannah Cockroft powering to victory in 2:07.10 ahead of 14-year-old Kare Adenegan and Mel Nicholls, who clocked 2:09.66 and 2:09.29 respectively.

“I can’t quite believe it, I have been so nervous about this competition, but I gave it all that I had and I won the gold medal!" Cockroft said afterwards.

"It’s a team GB top three as well, so it’s incredible."

Two other leading members of the British team also claimed gold today in the form of 200m T42 sprinter Richard Whitehead, who won in 24.10, and discus thrower Aled Davies, who retained his F42 discus title with a world record breaking throw of 49.59m.

Another star today was 100m T33 sprinter Ahmad Almutairi, who claimed Kuwait’s first IPC Athletics world medal of any kind since 2002 with victory in 17.53.

China were the dominant nation in the field, meanwhile, with world record breaking victories for Pengxiang Sun in the men's javelin F31 courtesy of a 43.67 throw, and for Juan Yao in the F44 shot put, with 13.14m.
