Ghana thumped Botswana 27-0 to make it two victories out of two in Pool A at the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Men’s African Championship in Johannesburg.

After a 5-0 win over Namibia in their opening game, the Ghanaian success this time was far more comprehensive as they put their inexperienced opponents to the sword.

There were eight goals for Johnny Botsio, while Isaac Moses, Sam Benedict and Salya Nsalbini all helped themselves to hat-tricks in wet conditions.

Richard Adjei, Emmanuel Akaba and Michael Baiden all scored two goals each, while Alfred Ntiamoah, Ernest Opoku, George Asiedu and Elikem Akaba were also on target.

It means Ghana join South Africa at the top of Pool A with two teams going through to the semi-finals.

Botswana, meanwhile, have endured a torrid time at the tournament after also going down 30-0 to the South Africans in a previous game.

Elsewhere in the Pool, Zimbabwe beat Namibia 6-3 to register an opening victory.

In Pool B, Egypt, fresh from a 22-0 win over Tanzania yesterday, made it two wins out of two by beating Kenya 4-1 and sit comfortably on top of the group.

Meanwhile, there was also success in the women’s tournament for Ghana, who claimed a third win in three by beating Zimbabwe, the 1980 Olympic champions, 4-0.

The Zimbabweans have now won once and lost twice in the round-robin phase, while there was also a third win in three for Kenya, who saw off Tanzania 5-0.

South Africa have a 100 per cent record too but have only played two matches, today overcoming Namibia 5-0.

Nicole Walraven and Lisa-Marie Deetlefts both struck twice and Lilian du Plessis was also on target.

The winners of both tournaments will earn a place at next year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
