Egypt enjoyed a strong start to the Men's African Hockey Championships ©FIH

Egypt’s men began life at the International Hockey Federation (FIH) African Championships with a thumping 22-0 win over Tanzania in Pool B in Johannesburg.

Mahmoud Mamdouh scored eight times for the Egyptians who blew away their opponents in the continental competition.

Mohamed Edris, Ahmed Elnaggar, Amr Elhady and Mostafa Mansour all scored twice each in the carnage, with Amr Syaed, Ahmed Mohsen, Mohamed Nasr, Ashraf Said, Amr Ibrahim and Hamada Atef also registering.

Elsewhere in the Pool, Kenya beat Nigeria 3-1 in the first contest for both countries.

Victor Kish put Nigeria ahead after 21 minutes but that was as good as it got for his country, as Maxwell Wakhungu levelled nine minutes later.

Samwel Wokila and Brian Saina went on to score the goals which won it for the Kenyans.

The tournament continues in the South African city tomorrow with a Rio 2016 berth the prize for the eventual winners.

The women’s tournament, which is running at the same time, was on a rest day today but is also set to resume tomorrow.
