Defending all-around champion Simone Biles produced another jaw-dropping display to help the United States qualify for the women's team final in stylish fashion, securing an all-important spot at next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in the process at the 2015 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships here today.

Biles was classy in all departments, recording a total score of 61.598 across the four disciplines which also sees her reach Thursday’s (October 29) all-around individual final, where she will bid for an unprecedented third straight title, as the top qualifier.

The formidable United States team, which also includes Gabrielle Douglas, double Olympic gold medallist at London 2012, Brenna Dowell, Madison Kocian, Maggie Nichols and Aly Raisman, posted a combined score of 236.611 to ensure they will get the chance to retain their team crown on Tuesday (October 27).

They will be joined at Rio 2016 by Russia, who had topped the standings after the first day, Britain, whose third-place was their highest ever, China, Italy, Japan, Canada and The Netherlands as the women's qualification at the event in Glasgow came to a fascinating conclusion.

Biles, who doesn’t turn 19 until March, engrossed the bumper crowd inside the arena with a dazzling performance on the floor, one of her preferred events which yielded gold at the 2014 World Championships in Nanning, China, scoring a total of 15.966.

She then went on to record a vault of 16.000, the highest of the event so far, though her team weren’t quite able to qualify in flawless style as they fell three times on the tricky uneven bars and once on the beam.

Dowell, who had earlier had to perform her floor routine with claps from the crowd as her soundtrack due to a technical fault, was disjointed on the apparatus, falling twice, before Raisman also stumbled.

Despite her pedigree on the Olympic stage, Douglas wasn’t immune from disappointment as she came off the balance beam midway through her routine.

But these were mere blips on in an otherwise outstanding effort from the defending champions, whose commanding final total laid down a marker to the rest of the competition and demonstrated why they are the favourites to retain their title.

Earlier on the second day of the event in the Scottish city, 2014 silver medallists China had made their eagerly-anticipated bow at the competition but in truth, their performance lacked its usual sparkle and well-drilled consistency, though they still posted a decent score of 225.127.

China's contingent were more workmanlike than world-class but they were still able to finish in the top four behind the American, Russian and British teams to comfortably reach the final.

The 24 qualifiers for the women’s individual all-around final were also confirmed, with Biles leading the way ahead of Douglas, the reigning Olympic champion, and Canada's Elsabeth Black, who posted the best individual score yesterday.

The Texan youngster also topped the standings in the vault, beam and floor disciplines, giving her the opportunity of leaving Glasgow with five golds.

While the American team will surely be pleased with their day's work, there was disappointment for the other members of squad as only Biles and Douglas progressed to the all-around final due to the limit of two athletes per nation being able to compete.

Tomorrow sees the men make their entrance at the event, with hosts Britain involved in the opening session.
