Russia’s Anastasiia Voinova lit up the penultimate day of the European Track Cycling Championships as she broke the women’s 500 metres time trial world record to earn her second gold in Grenchen, Switzerland.

Having won women’s team sprint gold on the opening day, Voinova had been forced to settle for silver in the individual event yesterday, but the 22-year-old ensured a return to the top of the podium with a blistering time trial.

The world champion in the discipline clocked a time of 32.794sec to take gold and dip under the previous world record of 32.836 set by Australia’s Anna Meares at altitude in 2013.

Elis Ligtlee, who had beaten Voinova in the individual sprint, was forced to settle for silver with the Dutch cyclist finishing in 33.561.

Another Russian, Daria Shmeleva,  took bronze in 33.842.

The Netherlands’ Jeffrey Hoogland, meanwhile, sealed a hat-trick of gold medals, winning the one kilometre time trial in a time of 1min 00.350sec to add to his team and individual sprint crowns.

Germany’s Joachim Eilers was narrowly off Hoogland’s pace as he finished in 1:00.569, good enough to seal silver ahead of the Czech Republic’s Robin Wagner, who completed the podium in 1:01.057.

The hosts were able to enjoy their first gold of the Championships as Stefan Kueng timed his effort to perfection to beat Germany’s Domenic Weinstein in the men’s individual 4km time trial in 4:14.992.

The Netherlands’ Dion Beukeboom beat France's Julien Morice, clocking 4:21.669, in the bronze medal ride.

Having suffered a surprising lack of success in the sprint events, France also claimed their first gold in Grenchen with Bryan Coquard outlasting Italy’s Simone Consonni and Britain’s Chris Latham to win the men’s elimination race.

A dramatic conclusion to men’s omnium saw Italy’s Elia Viviani triumph, winning the points race, with his final sprint seeing him finish ahead of with Denmark’s Lasse Hansen, despite being tied on 191 points, while Britain’s Jon Dibben earned bronze on 188.

At the halfway stage of the women’s omnium, Britain's London 2012 Olympic champion Laura Trott leads on 118 points, while Denmark’s Amalie Didieriksen is a further12 points further back in second.
