Prague has been awarded the 2016 International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) Under-23 World Games following a successful bid led by the Emil Foundation, a group set up by the Czech Paralympic Committee in memory of Emil Zatopek, one of the greatest long-distance runners in history.

The Games, formerly known as the IWAS World Junior Games, is due to take place next year between June 29 and July 3.

It is expected to feature athletics, swimming, table tennis, wheelchair fencing and wheelchair tennis, although the final programme has yet to be officially confirmed.

The annual event was first held at Stoke Mandeville in the United Kingdom, the birthplace of the Paralympic Movement, in 2005.

The Czech Republic will become the first country to host the Games three times having previously staged them in Olomouc in 2010 and 2012.

This year's event was held in Stadskanaal in The Netherlands.

Prague were awarded the event following a visit to the capital of the Czech Republic from the IWAS Games technical manager, Jan Bockweg.

The Emil Foundation is a non-profit organisation established in 2009 following six successful years in existence as the Emil Project to honour Zatokpek, winner of four Olympic gold medals, including three in the 5,000 metres, 10,000m and marathon at Helsinki 1952, making him the only runner in history to achieve such a treble.

The Foundation assists physically disabled children and young adults in their sporting involvement primarily through direct financial aid.

More than 8,000 athletes and teams have benefited from the work of the Emil Foundation already.

"We are extremely excited to be awarded the IWAS Games bid for 2016," said Veronika Kuchtová, project manager of the Emil Foundation.

"We look forward to working with IWAS in the preparation of the Games and welcoming athletes to a successful and enjoyable competition in the city of Prague."
