Eurosport scooped the Best TV Rights Deal prize at the inaugural TV Sports Awards, co-hosted by SPORTELMonaco, for their agreement for the European television rights for the Olympic Games at a ceremony held at the Yacht Club de Monaco.

The deal is worth around €1.3 billion (£965 million/$1.5 billion) and will cover two Olympic cycles following an agreement signed between the International Olympic Committee and Discovery Communications, the parent company of the pan-European television sports network.

It will cover the Pyeongchang 2018 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics, as well as the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games and the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, which have yet to be awarded to a host city.

Eurosport enjoyed a fruitful evening at the event, which was co-organised by charity Play for Change, as chief executive Peter Hutton picked up the Media Executive of the Year award, beating off competition from Spanish La Liga President Javier Tebas and Joerg Daubitzer, managing director of DFL Sports Enterprises.

The channel was also named Best Sports Broadcaster ahead of BT Sport and LeTV Sports.

Omnigon’s were awarded the Best Digital Media Project for their 2015 Rugby World Cup mobile application, which was chosen ahead of sportswear brand Adidas’ “All in or Nothing” advertising campaign and EA Sports’ The Madden GIFERATOR, which allows fans to generate videos in GIF format using NFL highlights.

The other main award of the night went to Amaury Sport Organisation for their coverage of this year’s Tour de France, with the FIFA Women’s World Cup and International Sports Broadcasting’s presentation of the inaugural European Games in the Azerbaijani capital Baku in June also nominated.

Votes were cast online between September 8 and October 2 by attendees at SPORTEL and the nominees were selected by an independent committee from TV Sports Media Award partners.

The first-ever TV Sports Awards were attended by a host of sporting personalities including Italian World Cup winning captain Fabio Cannavaro, former FIFA World Player of the Year Luis Figo and ex-England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand.

Play for Change gave out a special award for a sporting figure who they feel has contributed most to helping vulnerable children through sport, which was given to Ferdinand for his work with the Rio Foundation.

“We are thrilled to announce such a host of worthy winners for the inaugural TV Sports Awards," Play for Change director Marie Le Page said.

"Play for Change uses sport and education as a driver of social change and the TV Sports Awards has been a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of our work to an influential audience.

“The evening celebrated the best of the sport media industry but also reflected on the power of sport in helping to change the lives of disadvantaged communities and children.

“It has been a fantastic occasion and a pleasure to host world-renowned sportsmen and sportswomen plus some of the most important stakeholders in the sport and media industry at the ceremony.”
