Dickson Chumba led a Kenyan clean sweep of the podium as he won the elite men's race at the Chicago Marathon today, while his compatriot Florence Kiplagat took the women's honours.

Twenty-nine-year-old Chumba, the 2014 winner of the Tokyo Marathon, won another of the world's Majors in a time of 2 hours, 9 minutes and 25 seconds.

He was a full 25-seconds clear of his compatriot Sammy Kitwara, who was runner-up in Chicago for the second consecutive year, while Sammy Ndungu was third to complete a fine day for the African country.

Chumba took control after 23 miles of the race in the Windy City, in the first edition of the marathon not to feature pacemakers, a move introduced by organisers as part of a bid for more tactical racing.

However, their absence did lead to a slower race on what is traditionally a fast course.

Meanwhile, Kenya also claimed the women's top prize as Florence Kiplagat won in a time of 2:23.33.

The 28-year-old made a late burst for her victory and the half-marathon world record holder and former World Cross Country Championships gold medallist fended off Ethiopia's Yebrgual Melese by ten seconds.

Ethiopia claimed third position as well with Birhane Dibaba completing the podium.

Australian Kurt Fearnley won the men's wheelchair race with American Tatyana McFadden setting a course record of 1:41.10 to win the women's event.
