Three ski resorts have been put forward by the French Ski Federation (FFS) as potential venues for the 2023 Alpine World Skiing Championships, after they launched an official bid to host the biennial event.

France last hosted the Championships in 2009 in Val d'Isere, which is one of the venues to be suggested by the national governing body, along with Chamonix and Courchevel-Méribel.

Each of the three venues are set to host an International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Skiing World Cup event in the 2015 to 2016 season, highlighting their ability to stage elite competition.

Michel Von, FFS President, said that a decision will be made on which venue will be put forward to stage the 2023 World Championship after confirming they were seeking to host its 47th edition.

“We decided that France will be a candidate, and we will choose the site next year,” he said to AFP.

"We're going to turn to the three brands, the three ski resorts that can accommodate such an event, that is to say, Chamonix, Val d'Isere and Courchevel-Méribel.

“The French selection will be decided in 2016."

Should their bid prove successful it would be the fifth time the country has held the Championships with Chamonix hosting in 1937 and 1962 and Grenoble and Val d'Isere staging the event in 1968 and 2009 respectively.

The next edition is due to take place in the Swiss resort of St. Moritz in 2017 before heading to Are, Sweden in 2019.

Cortina d'Ampezzo is expected to be confirmed as the venue for the Championships in 2021, with the Italian resort having been revealed as the sole bidder earlier this year.
