São Paulo has signed a host city contract to stage Olympic football, with 10 matches set to be played in the Corinthians Arena during Rio 2016.

Two group matches in the men’s competition are scheduled to be held in the venue during the Games, while a quarter-final and semi-final tie are also on the fixture-list for the 48,000 capacity stadium.

Additionally, the venue, built for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, is set to play host to four matches in the women’s group stage, as well as one quarter-final and the bronze medal match.

São Paulo's State and City Governments signed the agreements with Rio 2016 in a ceremony at the Arena, joining fellow Brazilian cities Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia and Manaus as confirmed hosts of football during the Games, as well as Rio de Janeiro.

"Our wish and our message has always been that the Rio 2016 Games are for all of Brazil, that they will integrate the country," said CRio 2016 President Carlos Nuzman.

"This extraordinary stadium makes us all proud and will certainly be the stage of important matches."

The Arena staged six matches at last year’s World Cup, when the capacity was 66,200 due to temporary seating, including the opening match of the tournament between Croatia and hosts Brazil.

It also played host to Argentina’s semi-final victory over The Netherlands.

Following the tournament the venue became the home stadium for Corinthians Football Club.

The signing ceremony was attended by the club’s President Roberto de Andrade, as well as São Paulo State Governor Geraldo Alckmin São Paulo Mayor Fernando Haddad and Rogerio Hasman, secretary of football and supporter rights at the Federal Government's Ministry of Sport.

Andrade welcomed the signing of the agreement and believes that the city will prove to be exceptional hosts for both teams and spectators during the Games.

“It will be a pleasure for Corinthians to help host the Olympic Games,” he said.

“We will welcome our Olympic guests, we want them to feel at home here.”
