The International Cycling Union (UCI) have awarded WorldTour status to the women’s professional road race at next year’s RideLondon.

Having launched in 2013, the event is due for its fourth edition next year and is set to become one of 13 one-day races to have been included on the UCI’s women’s WorldTour, which is due to take over from the Women’s Road World Cup next March.

The WorldTour, which will also include four stage races and events in nine countries, is set to be the leading series for women’s professional cycling and has been established to help continue the fast growth of the sport.

Mick Bennett, race director of RideLondon, has welcomed the decision to include the event on the women’s WorldTour.

“We are delighted to be awarded WorldTour status for 2016,” he said.

“With its stunning route in the centre of London and live TV coverage, this event is one that every cyclist wants to race.

“This year, the women’s event saw a world first with live coverage from cameras on bikes and we are planning more innovations for 2016.”

The women’s road race at the 2016 RideLondon is due to take place on July 30 and is set to be the 13th of 17 events on the WorldTour calendar, while it will also be the second to be held in Britain after the five-stage Aviva Women’s Tour takes place in June.

The calendar also includes spring classics early in the season and monument races, with a minimum of 20 UCI women’s teams set to be invited to each event, although organisers can choose to increase the size of the peloton by inviting more teams to race.
