The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) demonstration team has continued its high-profile tour of North America by performing at the United States Military Academy’s Mess Hall in West Point, New York.

It comes on the back of the team's historic performance at United Nations (UN) headquarters, also in the Big Apple, in a ceremony to mark this year’s International Day of Peace on Monday (September 21).

WTF President Chungwon Choue and his Pan American Taekwondo Union (PATU) counterpart Jiho Choi were in attendance at the event along with members of the United States Military Academy taekwondo team.

The WTF taekwondo demonstration team is also due to display its talents at the World Bank in Washington D.C. in the coming days.

Coinciding with the International Day of Peace, an event first proposed in 1981 by his late father Young Seek Choue, Choue used a visit to UN headquarters to formally announce the formation of the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF).

In his address, he outlined the WTF’s plans to assist the global community with the growing refugee crisis; a matter he had raised in a meeting with UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon on Sunday (September 20).

The THF will discharge teams of instructors to teach taekwondo to young people in refugee camps around the world, keeping them active, while aiming to instil in them taekwondo's philosophy and values of Olympism.

Plans for the foundation are still being finalised with the WTF looking to officially establish it before the end of the year in the Olympic capital of Lausanne.

After his speech, Choue introduced the WTF's taekwondo demonstration team, which showcased the sport for the first time ever at the prestigious location.

Having performed for the assembled UN officials and some 700 young students, the team also taught taekwondo skills to the participants.
