South Korea’s Choi Misun claimed gold in the women’s recurve at the Aquece Rio International Archery Challenge after producing an excellent performance in her semi-final and final matches in the iconic Sambódromo venue.

Having qualified third for the elimination rounds of the competition, which has doubled as the Rio 2016 Olympic test event, Misun knew she would need to raise her standards if she was to challenge her team-mates Ki Bo Bae and Kang Chae Young.

She began the head to head stage in style after overcoming three-time World Cup Final silver medallist Deepika Kumari of India 7-3 on route to reaching the quarter-finals where she overcame Italy’s Vanessa Landi 6-0.

It left her the only remaining South Korean in the event after the Olympic champion Bae, who had topped the qualification standings, made a surprise exit following a 6-5 loss to Ya-Ting Tan of Chinese Taipei in the last eight.

Misun and Tan would meet in the gold medal match after sealing victories over America’s Mackenzie Brown and Japan’s Kaori Kawanaka in their respective semi-final ties, but the South Korean would prove to be a class above her opponent throughout.

The 19-year-old shot four of the 12 arrows into the 10-ring during the gold medal match and Tan was unable to respond to that level of accuracy and eventually fell to a comprehensive 7-1 defeat to her inspired opponent.

“I’m happy with my performance today,” said Misun, who had already triumphed in the team event earlier in the week.

“From the start I had a good pace, so I was confident with my shooting.”

Meanwhile in the bronze medal tie Brown bounced back from her semi-final defeat to the eventual winner by overcoming Japan’s Kawanaka 7-1.
