International Equestrian Federation (FEI) stalwart Hansi Wallmeier has died following a long battle with cancer, on the day before his 74th birthday, it has been announced.

The German was one of the most respected people in the sport and, after serving a commercial apprenticeship with the German Olympic Sports Confederation, began his career as a flat jockey before becoming a dressage and jumping rider.

He managed to achieve 35 victories during his amateur years and following the conclusion of his riding career, he opted to move into the judging field.

Wallmeier became director of the German Association of Judges in Warendorf in 1970 and retired following half a century’s service to the sport in 2007.

The German was well-renowned for his service as an FEI steward and was known for his significant contribution to clean and fair sport.

“Hansi Wallmeier was a great horseman and a true role model for the entire equestrian world,” secretary general of the German National Federation Soenke Lauterbach said.

The highlight of his stewarding career came in 2006, where he was chief steward for the FEI World Equestrian Games in Aachen in his home nation of Germany.

Wallmeier also received several honours during his time within the sport, including the Horsemanship award by the German Association for the Protection of Horses and Rider Silver Cross, given to him by German National Federation in 2006.

“Hansi Wallmeier was a really wonderful person, who contributed greatly to the sport of jumping,” FEI director John Roche added.

“We are extremely grateful for the service he gave to equestrian sport as an international Judge and Steward.

“He will be greatly missed on the international circuit.”
