Athletics, basketball, swimming and table tennis events at the 2015 International Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disability (Inas) Global Games have been moved due to the Cotopaxi volcano in host country Ecuador beginning to show signs of an eruption.

There had already been concern regarding the athletics and table tennis venues situated near to the volcano in the town of Latacunga but, following discussions with the Ecuadorian Government and Institute of Geophysics, competitions based in the captial Quito are also to be moved to prevent causing risk to health.

The Inas Governing Board have now confirmed that athletics competitions will take place in Guaranda, with swimming and basketball now set to be held in the town of Guayaquil.

Table tennis will be held at Cuenca, while there is still the potential for further changes to venues in the coming days, despite the start of competition only being just over two weeks away.

The volcano, located around 30 miles south of Quito, is considered one of the most dangerous in the area and it has been reported that hundreds of thousands could be affected by mud and rock flows.

The Ecuadorian Government has declared a state of emergency and the region is preparing for a full eruption.

Meanwhile, in preparation for the Games, volunteers have been taking part in training sessions at the Eloy Alfaro Military School (ESMIL) in Quito, with the aim to advise them on their specific roles during the duration of the week-long event.

Additionally the training also included giving the volunteers an overview of the competition venues, as well as providing them with details of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, which are due to take place on September 20 and 27 respectively.

The fourth edition of the Games for the world’s best athletes with an intellectual disability is the first to be held outside of Europe and is due to see competition take place in athletics, basketball, cycling, futsal, swimming, rowing, table tennis, tennis and taekwondo.

Britain’s Peter Millar is due to be one of 650 athletes from 35 nations due to compete at the Games and he will be hoping to achieve success in tennis.

Millar represented Britain at the Inas World Championships at the age of 16, four years after taking up the sport, and his mother Susan believes he is relishing the opportunity to take part in the Global Games.

''Peter is really excited about Ecuador and will put his heart and soul in it,'' she said.

“Tennis is really close to his heart and being selected to represent Great Britain in Ecuador in September is such a great honour for Peter.

“Not only does he take his sport seriously, his rigorous training regimes are also an inspiration for others.”
