Russia proved the dominant country on the opening day of freestyle competition at the Cadet Wrestling World Championships, securing three golds and a bronze in Sarajevo.

Ivan Okoneshnikov got the Russians off to the best possible start, pinning Iran's Amir Mohammad Yazdanicherati in their 42 kilograms gold medal bout in the second quarter, taking advantage of a missed throw from his opponent to secure the title.

Irlasbek Nurakhmet of Kyrgyzstan claimed the first bronze medal available with a 4-2 win over Uzbekistan’s Islom Ilkhomov, with the second going to Azerbaijan’s Shahin Mukhtarov, beating Bulgaria's Tzvetan Mustafov.

The Russian success continued in the under 69kg category as Slavik Naniev ensured he topped the podium with a 13-0 technical fall triumph in his final with European bronze medallist Ismail Abdullayev of Azerbaijan.

Iran's Mojtaba Osmavandani and Japan's Taro Umebayashi both clinched bronze with victories over Georgia's Iveriko Julakidze and Samy Hamdy Amin respectively.

Diakomihalis made light work of his five opponents leading up to the final and was able to replicate that earlier form when it truly mattered, clinching the title with a 6-3 win against Japan’s Jintaro Motoyama.
