Russia’s recurve men’s open team shot a huge combined score of 1,926 points to set a world qualifying record at the World Archery Para Championships in Donaueschingen, Germany.

Current individual world record holder Bato Tsydendorzhiev scored 652 points, while team mates Sergey Khutakov and Anton Zaypaev notched 641 and 633 respectively as Russia occupied three of the top six places in the standings.

China’s Shi Xu Cheng led for much the round but finished in third place, scoring 639 points, while Iranian duo Gholamreza Rahimi and 2011 world champion Ebrahim Ranjbarkivaj came fourth and fifth, respectively.

It was the Russians who set the standard from the start, however, and went on to break the world record mark by 92 points.

"I am very happy with the win and the team world record," said Tsydendorzhiev.

"I shot really well today and so did my team mates.

"We have been training a lot in the build up to this competition and felt well prepared coming to Germany."

United States’ squad also set a personal best for team qualifying, scoring 1,861 points, which would have beaten the previous world record before the start of the day.

Meanwhile, in the compound women’s open South Korea’s Kim Misoon came home eight points clear of the rest of the field with a total of 685 points.

Great Britain’s Mel Clarke and Italy’s Eleonora Sarti both had 677 points at the end of qualification, but it was the latter who edged the higher ranking, and second seed, by virtue of her superior number of X10s.

The qualifying score was actually a personal best in competition for Clarke, who was not sure she’d even be ready to compete in Donaueschingen.

"I had minor surgery on my wrist about three months ago," said the London 2012 Paralympic silver medallist.

"I’ve had a great rehab and a team working to get prepared for the competition."

As for the recurve women’s open, China’s Wu Chunyan led the way over the 72-arrow ranking round with an impressive score of 650 points out of a possible 720.

Wu scored 55 points more than her nearest challenger Margarita Sidorenko of Russia, while Latvia’s Ieva Melle scored 593 to claim third place.

Two-time world champion Lee Hwa Sook of South Korea had to settle for fourth after she scored 591 points, with European champion Elisabetta Mijno of Italy completing the top five having also scored 591 but with one less X10 than Lee.

Mijno came into the competition with a shoulder injury and, despite scoring 15 fewer points with her final 36 arrows than she did with her first, managed to post a very competitive score.

Defending world champion Brigitte Duboc of France was one of three archers to finish on a score of 587 points and qualified in eighth position.
