China’s Chen Long and Carolina Marin of Spain both successfully defended their singles crowns as the Badminton World Championships drew to a close in Jakarta today.

Chen, an Olympic medallist at London 2012, claimed a 21-14, 21-17 victory over Malaysian Lee Chong Wei to ensure he topped the podium for the second successive World Championships.

Marin, meanwhile, proved too strong for India’s Saina Nehwal, emerging from a tight contest with a 21-16, 21-19 success, maintaining her dominance of the women’s singles event.

The 22-year-old came into the event as the favourite and was able to justify her number one world ranking with a clinical display which saw her add another world gold to the European title she won in Kazan last year.

"I feel happier this time compared to last time," she said.

"Both experiences have been great and I felt at home because the crowd was chanting my name.

"This year it was more difficult to win the title as I had a foot injury last month, I thought I couldn’t play."

Chinese star Chen was able to contain the threat of Lee, ca former world number who only returned to the sport in May after an eight-month doping ban, by exhibiting stout defence as the Malaysian tried to stamp his authority on proceedings.

He was unable to find a way past the resilient Chinese player and saw many of his attempted smashes come back over the net, taking the wind out of his sails.

Chen grew in confidence throughout the match and largely controlled the tempo, proving too strong for Lee, particularly in the second game as his smash began to find its range.

Lee, meanwhile, can be encouraged by his performance but he did not quite have enough on the day as Chen powered to a straight-games victory to clinch his second world title.

The result prolongs the wait for a World Championships gold medal for the Lee as the two-time Olympic silver medallist was forced to settle for second for the third consecutive event.

"Last year too I cried, but this year I cried even more because it was difficult to win," an emotional Chen said.

"For many years, nobody from China has won a major men’s singles event in Indonesia, so I’m very happy to win the title here."

In the women’s final, Marin was expected to be tested to her limits by Nehwal, who overcame former champion Wang Yihan in the last eight, but was able to seize control of the match early on before seeing out a straight-games win.

She demonstrated her vast array of shots on her way to taking the opening game, before Nehwal, the first Indian to reach a World Championships final, looked as though she would take the match into a decider, establishing a 12-6 lead in the second.

Marin showed, however, why she is the world’s top player as she fought back and overhauled the deficit, eventually surging to a 21-19 success, handing her another commanding triumph.

The Badminton World Federation were forced to apologise to Marin after the medal ceremony as the wrong national anthem was played, which an official admitted was an "unfortunate mistake".
