Defending champion Maria Sharapova and 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer were among the third-round winners today at the French Open.

Federer, the second seeded 2009 winner who is seeking a first Major title for three years, qualified for the second week of action at Roland Garros for the 11th year in a row with a straightforward 6-4 6-3 6-2 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina's Damir Dzumhur.

Despite his 33-years and the recent dominance of rivals including world number one Novak Djokovic, the Swiss admitted afterwards that his illustrious career could still last for another five years.

"Would winning a Grand Slam make me play longer?" he speculated after his victory.

"Possibly,

"I may stop the following day or I may go on for another five years, I don't know.

"What I can tell you is that if I win Wimbledon or another Grand Slam, I'll be extremely happy so it won't make a difference."

Federer will now play either Gael Monfils of France or Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay for a place in the quarter-finals.

There was a similarly regulation progression today for Sharapova, who eased past Australia's Sam Stosur, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the last 16.

Winner in 2008 Ana Ivanovic, meanwhile, gained a 53-minute 6-0 6-3 win over Croatian opponent Donna Vekic.

The Serbian seventh seed was watched by footballer boyfriend, the Bayern Munich and Germany star Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Other winners today included the men's fifth, eight and 12th seeds in Kei Nishikori of Japan, Stanislav Wawrinka of Switzerland and Gilles Simon of France, who won an all-host nation five set duel with Nicolas Mahut.

Czech Republic's seventh seed Lucie Safarova and Russia's ninth seed Ekaterina Makarova were among those to progress on the women's side of the draw.
