France clinched a memorable victory over Colombia on the opening day of women’s World Group pool contests at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) BNP Paribas World Team Cup in Antalya, Turkey.

Colombia’s Angelia Bernal and France’s Charlotte Famin both earned 6-1, 6-2 wins in their respective singles rubbers to set up a deciding Pool C doubles contest.

Bernal and Johana Martinez won key points in the second set to keep Colombia's hopes of an early win alive, but Famin and Emmanuelle Morch dug deep in the tie-break to earn France a 2-1 victory after sealing the doubles 6-2, 4-6.

The other match to go to a deciding doubles rubber was that between Thailand and Chile, with the former coming out on top.

Thailand, bronze medallist in 2010 when Antalya first hosted the event, were kept in their Pool B tie against Chile by former world number six and Asian Para Games gold medallist Sakhorn Kahanthasit, who beat Francisca Mardones 6-2, 6-1.

Wanitha Inthanin later put her singles loss to Macarena Cabrillana behind her when she partnered Khanthasit to defeat Cabrillana and Mardones 6-4, 6-3.

In Pool D, the United States proved too strong for Australia from the outset as Kaitlyn Verfuerth powered to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Janel Manns.

Emmy Kaiser put the tie beyond Australia’s reach by beating Sarah Calati 6-1, 6-2 before Dana Mathewson partnered Verfuerth to wrap up a 3-0 victory.

Elsewhere, Mariska Venter and Kgothatso Montjane dropped just three games between them across their two singles rubbers to inspire South Africa to a 3-0 win over Turkey in Pool A.

Meanwhile in the men’s World Group II, 2012 bronze medallists Sri Lanka got off to a successful start against Italy after a pivotal doubles victory.

Fabian Mazzei overcame Gamini Dissanayake 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 after Upali Rakakaruna had put Sri Lanka one singles rubber up.

But the Italian was helpless to prevent Dissanayake and Rajakaruna sealing a 2-1 victory for Sri Lanka after they took the doubles 6-3, 6-3.

Greece’s hopes of reaching the World Group II final for the second time in three years suffered a blow after they lost to Germany in Pool C.

Georgios Lazaridis and Stefanos Diamantis won the doubles for Greece but it proved too little, too late having lost out to Sven Hiller and Steffen Sommerfeld respectively in the singles.

In Pool A, Wittaya Peem-Mee set the 2012 champions Thailand on their way to a 3-0 victory against Colombia after coming from behind to win a fiery opening singles rubber at the expense of Mauricio Vega, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Suthi Khlongrua secured the middle leg by defeating Eliecer Oquendo 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 before he partnered Peem-Mee to win the doubles 6-4, 6-4.

Switzerland eased through its opening Pool B tie against host nation Turkey as Daniel Pellegrina claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Hakan Gungor, and Herbert Keller beat Turan Akalin 6-2, 6-3 in the two singles rubbers.

In the quads competition Pool A, the top-seeded Americans comfortably beat Canada 3-0, while Japan defeated South Korea 2-1.

Pool B saw defending champions Great Britain lose 2-1 to Italy, as Israel edged out South Africa by the same scoreline.

In the junior event, defending champions and top seeds Russia dropped just one game in the opening two singles rubbers en route to a 3-0 win against hosts Turkey in Pool A

The 3-0 success was matched by The Netherlands against Belgium, while in Pool B there were also 3-0 wins for the second seeded Americans against Britain, and Argentina in their encounter with Switzerland.
