Roger Federer has criticised security at the French Open after a spectator ran on court and attempted to take a photograph with him during his regulation first round victory over Colombia's Alejandro Falla.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion - seeded second for this year's event but in the opposite half of the draw from bitter rivals Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray - defeated his 111th ranked South American opponent 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 on Court Philippe Chatrier.

He was confronted by the intruder, a young fan seemingly intent on only a "selfie", after the match, but was furious at the potential risk to athletes' safety particularly as something similar had happened during his 2009 final against Sweden's Robin Soderling.

A protester with a flare made it onto the same court during the 2013 final between Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer.

"I'm not happy about it," Federer said.

"It happened in the practice, too.

"It was just a kid, but then three more kids came.

"And on Centre Court, where you would think this is a place where nobody can come on, he just wanders on and nothing happens.

"It happened during the finals in 2009 as well for me, so I definitely think that something needs to happen quickly."

On a good day for Switzerland, eighth seed Stanislav Wawrinka was another winner, beating Turkey's Marsel Ilhan, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3.

Fifth seed Kei Nishikori of Japan, meanwhile, overcame France's Pierre-Henri Mathieu.

Other winners included Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany and Ernst Gulbis of Latvia.

On the women's side of the draw, last year's finalist Simona Halep of Romania battled to a 7-5, 6-4 win over unseeded Russian Evgeniya Rodina.

Rodina's ninth seeded compatriot Ekaterina Makarova was another winner.

First round action is due to continue at Rolland Garros tomorrow.
