Teenage Russian star Margarita Mamun led the way as the European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships opened today in Minsk, leading qualification in both the ball and hoop competitions and propelling her nation towards an eighth straight team title.

The 19-year-old, who took an all-around silver medal amid three other golds at last year’s World Championships in Izmir, scored 19.000 points to lead the hoop event before a total of 18.833 saw her prove similarly dominant in the ball qualification.

In the latter, she leads Yana Kudryavtseva, the defending champion who finished top of the podium and above Mamun at the World Championships, while home hope Melitina Staniouta of Belarus lies third.

Staniouta qualified in second place in the hoop event, one place ahead of yet another Russian in Aleksandra Soldatova.

Unsurprisingly, the Russians are also comfortably clear in the team event to lead Belarus and Israel, who are on course to match the bronze medal they won in Baku last year.

Ukraine, 2014 runners-up Italy and Spain occupy the next three positions.

Following club and ribbon qualifying events tomorrow, the first medals will be awarded when the team competition comes to a close, with the individual apparatus finals then taking place on Sunday (May 3).
