Mark Alexander, chairman of Durban’s 2022 Commonwealth Games Bid Committee, believes the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Evaluation Commission’s visit is highlighting how the South African city is ready to host the Games.

Having held talks related to the technical aspects of the city’s bid Alexander is confident discussions will strengthen their existing proposal to become the first African hosts of the Commonwealth Games.

“We are expecting robust discussion and debate from the Evaluation Commission, but we are confident that our Bid is well-grounded, sustainable and will stand up to the most vigorous scrutiny,” he said.

CGF honorary secretary Louise Martin, the CGF Presidential contender who is leading the Commission’s work in Durban, opened the talks here today by insisting their role was to evaluate and advise the city on their plans, adding how she hopes the visit will “be the beginning of a candid, collaborative and constructive partnership".

“Our intention is to work with you and support you,..” she said.

“To evaluate the current development and help optimise them in partnership and preparation for their endorsement by the CGF General Assembly in September.”

The Commission also took part in a tour of prospective venues for the Games, including the 54,000-capacity Moses Mabhida Stadium, which has been proposed to host Opening and Closing Ceremonies in 2022, in addition to athletics.

The outdoor Rachel Finlayson swimming pool, earmarked as the first option for aquatics, and the Durban International Convention Centre, which is proposed to hold badminton, boxing, judo, powerlifting, weightlifting and wrestling events, were among the venues visited by the Commission.

Following the conclusion of the four-day visit, the Commission will produce a Bid Evaluation Report, which will be presented to CGF members no later than a month before the CGF General Assembly, due to take place in Auckland on September 2.

As the sole bidder for the 2022 Games, following the Canadian city of Edmonton withdrawing from the race, Durban’s bid is expected to be ratified at the General Assembly, confirming the city as the first African hosts of the Games.
