South Africa’s Ilse Hayes became the world’s fastest female Para-athlete by beating the previous T13 100 metres world record, at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics Grand Prix in São Paulo.

Home favourite Terezinha Guilhermina, meanwhile, narrowly missed out on breaking her own T11 100m world record 

Hayes produced a time of 11.89sec to win the T13 event from Cuba’s Omara Durand, who ran 12.07 to break the Americas 100m T12 mark by 0.30.

Hayes' time also saw her assume to title of world’s fastest female Para-athlete from China’s Guohua Zhou, with the T12 athlete having previously held the record with a time of 11.91.

Guilhermina, a triple Paralympic campion, who recently trained with Jamaica's six-time Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt, finished 0.04 outside her world record time of 12.01 to win the T11 event on a day of fast times.

Another home favourite to excel was Petrucio Ferreira dos Santos, who saw off the challenge of returning team mate and London 2012 champion Alan Fonteles Oliveira in the men’s T47 100m.

Dos Santos finished in 10.88 to take gold ahead of Oliveira, the runner-up in 11.00, with an all-Brazilian podium was completed by 200m world champion Yohansson Nascimento in 11.40.

Home success continued in the 100m events with Felipe da Souza Gomes and Gustavo Henrique Faria Araujo winning the men’s T11 and T13 events, in addition to Adiele de Moraes, Tascitha Oliveria Cruz and Ana Claudia Maria Da Silver sealing victories in the women’s T20, T36 and T42 classes.

South African duo Jonathan Ntutu and Dyan Buis triumphed in the men’s T12 and T38 races respectively, and Argentina enjoyed success in the men’s T35 and T36 categories through Diego Martin Gonzalez and Rotondo Henrique.

Sweden’s Niklas Almers and Venezuela's Yescarly Medina completed the list of 100m winners.

Almers took gold in the men’s T54 race in 14.74, while Medina claimed a comprehensive women’s T37 victory in 14.62.

On a packed day of action at the Grand Prix, only Angola's Alberto Lussasse and Argentina's Mariano Domingues were able to prevent total Brazilian domination of the 1500m races.

Lussasse won the men’s T46 event in 4mim 23.89sec, before Domingues smashed the previous Americas’ record by seven seconds to win the men’s T37 in 4:39.65.

The hosts, though were the clear force in the middle distance event.

Carlos Jose Barto Da Silva, Yeltsin F. Ortega Jacques, Felipe Leocadio Curcino, Jose Henrique Campos Mattos and Rildo Carlos Pinto Saldanha took gold in the men’s T11, T12, T13, T20 and T54 classes respectively, while Maria de Fatima Fonseca Chaves won the women's T54 in 4:03.33.

A stunning day for Brazil continued with a clean sweep of the high jump events as Ernesto Epifanio Mendonca lept 1.60 resto win the T12 class, while Flavio Reitz and Jorge Veiga Martins won the T42 and T47 events by both jumping 1.71m.

The hosts will hope that their performances will continue throughout the course of the Grand Prix, due to finish on Saturday (April 25), having also won four discus, four shot put and two javelin golds on the opening day.

Sandro Varelo de Oliveria’s performance in the men’s F55 discus proved a highlight, as he threw 32.24m to break the nine-year-old Americas record by 83 centimetres. 

Argentina's Hernan Urra also set an Americas record in the men’s F35 shot put with a throw of 12.89m, while Cuba's Lazaro Zamora Galguera threw 12.35m to take gold in the men's F46 event.

South Africa's Reinhardt Hamman clinched men’s F38 gold with a distance of 13.77m and Yomaira Cohen added to Venezuela's tally with victory in the women’s F37 javelin competition.
