Australia’s Evan O’Hanlon and Scott Reardon will have the opportunity to defend their world titles after being confirmed as automatic selections for the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships in Doha.

Both athletes, coached by the renowned Iryna Dvoskina, will represent the Australian Flame team in the 100 metres, with O’Hanlon looking to retain the T38 crown he won in Lyon two years ago, and Reardon vying to keep hold of the T42 accolade taken after a dead heat with Germany's Heinrich Popow.

Five-time Paralympic gold medallist O’Hanlon created history in February when he became the first Para-athlete to win the men’s able-bodied 100m at the Australian Capital Territory Athletics Championships.

Despite being hospitalised with viral meningitis in the build-up to the 2013 IPC Athletics Championships, O’Hanlon also claimed gold medals in the 200m and 400m T38 events and has set his sights on further success in October.

“It’s exciting,” said O’Hanlon, who holds the 100m and 200m world records.

“It’s always exciting to get selected for your country.

“It’s good to be confirmed this early.

“It means that we can get back to basic training in the knowledge we are on the team, because it takes time to build up to a World Championships and the earlier you know, the better.

“Lyon two years ago was an interesting campaign for me coming off pretty serious illness.

“On one hand it was disappointing that I wasn’t in the shape that I would have liked and I missed the chance to have a crack at the world record in the 400m, but on the other side of that, it is great to know that despite what was an unideal preparation I am capable of pulling it together at the championship and performing well.”

Reardon’s gold medal in Lyon came a year after he’d burst onto the scene by winning silver at London 2012.

The 24-year-old, who also took silver in the 200m T42, was triumphant at last month’s Australian Athletics Championships in the men’s ambulant 100m.

Automatic selection is offered to athletes who won a gold medal in an individual event at the last IPC Athletics World Championships, providing they have attained at least one Athletics Australia ‘A’ Standard in that event during the ensuing qualification period.

O’Hanlon has achieved this in the 100m T38 three times, while Scott has bettered the required mark in the T42 class on seven occasions.

“Congratulations to Evan and Scott on their automatic selection to the Australian Flame team for the IPC Athletics World Championships,” said Dion Russell, Athletics Australia chairman of selectors.

“The selectors wish you the best of luck as you prepare to defend the gold medals you won in France two years ago.”

The remainder of the team will be confirmed at the final selection meeting, scheduled to take place in the week commencing August 31, ahead of the Championships from October 23 to 31.
