Norway's skip Thomas Ulsrud scored the decisive point in the Page 1v2 play-off ©WCFDefending champions Norway overcame hosts Canada to qualify for the gold medal game at the Ford World Men's Curling Championship at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax.

Skip Thomas Ulsrud drew his last stone of the Page 1v2 play-off's extra end into the house to score one point, and claim a 7-6 win that guarantees a silver medal for Norway at the very least.

Canada will now face either Sweden, third-place finishers in the round-robin stage, or Finland, 6-5 tie-breaker winners against the United States, in the sole semi-final tomorrow.

The winner will have the opportunity to deny Norway a second successive title after they won the event in Beijing last year.

The holders opened the scoring against Canada with one point in the first end, before opposition skip Pat Simmons hit out a stone to score two points and take a 2-1 lead.

Simmons was facing three Norwegian counters in the fifth end, when he drew his final stone into the house to score one point and establish a 3-2 lead.

Canada then stole a single point in the sixth end, before Ulsrud played an angle raise double take-out in the seventh to secure two points and level the scores at 4-4.

After Canada had scored one point in the eighth end for a 5-4 lead, Ulsrud hit out a Canadian stone to score two points in the ninth and make it 6-5 to the Norwegians.

Tight all the way, Canada levelled the game at 6-6 with one point in the tenth end, before Ulsrud settled the encounter in the extra end.

"It feels really good because that was a really tight game," said Ulsrud.

"We had some good breaks and neither team was ever that far in front.

"I had to make a really crucial shot in seven I think, I had to make a run-double, not my favourite shot but I pulled it off."

Despite losing out Simmons is grateful for the fall back of a semi-final and a second chance to reach the gold medal game.

"We played pretty well and certainly had chances," he said.

"That's the way the game goes.

"We live to fight another day."

Sweden meet Finland tomorrow afternoon in the Page 3v4 play-off, with the winner facing Canada in the evening.
