The inaugural edition of the African Para-Taekwondo Championships has been postponed ©AFTUThe World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) has announced the inaugural edition of the African Para-Taekwondo Championships, scheduled to take place next month, has been postponed.

A new date has yet to be announced for the event, originally due to get underway on April 9 in Algiers.

Earlier this week, the WTF Para-Taekwondo had confirmed registration for the event was still open and issued a reminder that classification would be available the day before competition started.

The locations of four continental championships for 2015 were announced by the WTF in January, with new events in Africa and Asia highlighting the rapid growth of the sport.

Taiwan is due to host the first ever Asian Para-Taekwondo Championships, starting on April 17, while the fourth edition of the European Para-Taekwondo Championships is scheduled to take place place in Moldova, beginning April 20.

Completing the quartet is the Pan-American Para-Taekwondo Championships, set to be held in Colombia in September.

The African Para-Taekwondo Championships was in line to be the second event of the year to offer world ranking points, following on from last month's Canadian Para-Taekwondo Open.

In keeping with its pledge to guarantee the highest level of competition at Tokyo 2020 following taekwondo being added to the Paralympic programme, the WTF launched a world ranking system in December.

Continental Championships have been graded G4 tournaments in the new system, with the grade of each competition determining the number of rankings points one can earn through their performances

Winners of G8 tournaments, for example the World Para-Taekwondo Championships, earn 80 points compared to 10 points for winners of G1 contests, such as the Canadian Para-Taekwondo Open.

As of last month, only five African competitors were on the WTF Para-Taekwondo's classification list.

The quintet is made up of Ghana's Sharon Akwei and John Badu, and Morocco's Faycal Lahssaini, Abdennour Elfedainy and Mohamed Lamniai.
