Nomura Holdings has become the ninth Tokyo 2020 Gold Partner ©Nomura HoldingsJapanese financial holding company Nomura has been selected as the latest Tokyo 2020 Gold Partner.

As a Gold Partner, the highest tier in the Tokyo 2020 domestic sponsorship programme, Nomura will support both the Olympic and Paralympic Games and Japan's teams until the end of 2020.

The financial services group, which has an integrated global network spanning more than 30 countries, will provide valuable services and support in the category "Securities", adding to the impressive list of partners.

Nomura services the needs of individuals, institutions, corporates and Governments through its three business divisions - retail, asset management and wholesale - by connecting markets in East and West Asia.

"I am delighted that today Tokyo 2020 has concluded a Gold Partner agreement with Nomura Holdings Inc.," said Tokyo 2020 President, Yoshiro Mori.

"Naturally, I look forward to the support that Nomura will provide as a Tokyo 2020 Gold Partner, but I also hope that the company will continue the vital role it is playing in the securities market, which forms the foundation of the Japanese economy."

Nomura states on its website that the vision of the Tokyo 2020 Games - "Sport has the power to change the world and our future" - resonates with its long-standing culture of taking on new challenges and the firm's commitment to driving change.

In becoming a Gold Partner, Nomura aims to contribute to the success of the Tokyo 2020 Games and help athletes, companies, and Japanese society achieve new highs, it was explained.

"We are proud to support athletes on their journey to the Tokyo 2020 Games," said Nomura Group chief executive, Koji Nagai.

"The Olympic and Paralympic Games provide significant economic benefits to host countries and we see the Tokyo 2020 Games as the perfect opportunity to revitalise the Japanese economy.

"By supporting athletes aiming for their personal best and companies adapting to a changing environment, we hope to contribute to the success of the Tokyo 2020 Games while fostering economic growth and social development in Japan."

Nomura became a sponsor of the Japanese Olympic Committee in 1999 and remained so until the end of 2009, when the company decided against renewing an existing four-year deal.

The worldwide financial crunch saw the company lose more than $1.5 billion (£1 billion/€1.4 billion) between March 2009 and the following September.

Tokyo 2020 have already signed up eight other Gold Partners - Nippon Life Insurance Company, Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co, JX Nippon Oil & Energy Corporation, Fujitsu, NEC, Canon, Asahi Breweries, and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation.

The aim of the scheme is to raise a total of JPY¥150 billion (£840 million/€1.27 billion/$1.1 billion) in sponsorship to help offset the cost of the Games, and Tokyo 2020 are reportedly charging each Gold Partner JPY¥15 billion (£80 million/$128 million/€110 million) to be part of the spectacle.
