South Korea defeated Sweden to win the Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships B-Pool ©Getty ImagesSouth Korea survived their toughest test of the week to defeat hosts Sweden 4-2 and secure victory at the Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships B-Pool in Östersund.


Although the six-team competition consisted solely of a round-robin style format, the fact the tournament's two unbeaten teams met in the final game deemed the occasion a final in all but name.


Galvanised no doubt by the incentive of a home Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang in three years time, the Asian side had swept all before them in their opening four matches, accruing 43 goals at the cost of just one in a record that included a staggering 15-0 victory over Poland.


Yet the Scandinavian hosts, similarly successful in terms of results if not in the number of goals scored, were always likely to pose a tougher challenge in from of vocal home support, and so it proved.


South Korea took the lead in the first minute but Sweden hit back to draw level before the end of the first period.


It was in the second when the Asian side's added firepower eventually told as they scored three unanswered goals to sweep into a 4-1 lead.


The Europeans pulled one back in the third, but it was a case of too little too late.

Both sides are however promoted into the A-Pool Championships for 2017, where they will be up against, among others, the sport's three dominant powers, Canada, Russia and Sochi 2014 Paralympic gold medal winners, United States.


Slovakia sew up third place, meanwhile, with a regulation 3-0 victory over winless Austria, consigning their opponents to relegation into the C-Pool event, while Poland won a thrilling battle with Great Britain in the contest for fourth position.


With just 28 seconds of overtime remaining, the Poles scored the vital goal to secure a 3-2 victory.
