Swedish ski resort Åre will host the 2017 FIS FIS Junior Alpine World Ski Championships as a test event for the main edition two years later ©Getty ImagesÅre in Sweden has been chosen to host the 2017 Junior Alpine World Ski Championships, giving the city the opportunity to prepare for when it stages the senior edition of the event two years later.

The decision was taken by the International Ski Federation Council at a meeting held during the current FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in in Vail Beaver Creek.

It followed a proposal from the Swedish Ski Association and the organisers of the 2019 Alpine World Ski Championships, who claimed it would allow them to test the facilities and infrastructure, as well as giving young skiers the chance to compete at a top-class venue.

The Åre Ski Area is one of Scandinavia's leading ski resorts and has been part of Östersund's six unsuccessful bids for the Winter Olympics.

But it has successfully hosted the 1954 and 2007 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships and is a regular stop on the World Cup circuit.

A total of 350 skiers from 50 countries are expected to compete in the Junior Alpine World Ski Championships, which has been held annually since 1982 they were first staged in French resort Auron.

"It feels great and inspiring us to invest in the future skiers," said Niklas Carlsson, chief executive of Åre 2019 and director of the Swedish Ski Association.

"That we are arranging the Alpine Junior World Championships also fits well with our organisation for Åre in 2019."

This year's FIS Alpine Junior World Championships are due to be held in Hafjell, Norway, from March 5 to 14.

The 2016 event is scheduled to take place in Sochi, host of the 2014 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.
