The 31-year-old tested positive for banned stimulant methylhexaneamine following her fourth-place finish at Glasgow 2014 on July 29, behind Jamaican winner Stephenie McPherson.

She requested that a B-sample be tested and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has today confirmed the test, which took place at a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)-accredited laboratory in London on August 4, came back positive, adding Montsho has until August 22 to appeal the decision.

"The athlete has been notified of the findings and has the right to respond until Friday, August 22," said CGF chief executive Mike Hooper.

The CGF only has the power to disqualify Montsho from the Commonwealth Games.

But if she is found guilty at her hearing then she faces a possible two-year worldwide ban, as her case will be passed onto the WADA and other international federations, including the International Association of Athletics Federations.

Following the disclosure of the initial failed drugs test, sources in Botswana claimed Montsho unknowingly consumed an energy drink containing methylhexaneamine, while it was also being claimed she took it inadvertently as part of a flu medication.

At Athens 2004, Montsho became the first Botswanan woman to compete in an Olympic Games in any sport, and eight years later in London, she carried her country's flag in the Opening Ceremony, before finishing in fourth place in the final.

In between those she became Botswana's first ever gold medallist in any sport at a Commonwealth Games with her win in the 400m final at Delhi 2010, following that up in 2011 by taking the World Championship title in Daegu, before finishing second in Moscow at last year's World Championships.
