The 46-year-old, who secured a hat-trick of wins in the space of one hour at last year's Championships in Duisburg, defended her K1 A and V1 A titles in the Russian capital.

Chippington saw off the challenge of Svitlana Kupriianova of Ukraine to retain her K1 A 200 metres crown, with Alexandra Dupik of Russia picking up the bronze.

She added to that by taking the V1 A 200m race, finishing ahead of Australia's Kara Kennedy, while bronze went to Ukraine's Zoia Ovsii.

This year has added significance as canoeing is due to make its debut on the Paralympic programme at Rio 2016.

"I like the challenge, I put in the hard work and when I'm training I really enjoy it," said Chippington, who has competed at five Paralympic Games as a swimmer before switching to canoeing in 2012.

"I feel proud of myself, what a stunning location to become world champion."

Compatriot Emma Wiggs made it three gold medals on the day for Britain after she powered to victory in the K1 TA 200m with Christine Gauthier of Canada having to settle for silver, while bronze went to Ukraine's Nataliia Lagutenko.

"I'm blown away by it all," admitted an ecstatic Wiggs, who reperesented Britain in sitting volleyball at London 2012

"It's been a really hard winter of training.

"I didn't expect much after switching from V1 to kayak.

"To come away with a gold medal is a little bit hard to believe at the minute."

On the men's side, there were maiden World Championship wins for Italy's Pier Alberto Bucciliero, Curtis McGrath of Australia and Brazilian Luis Carlos Cardoso da Silva.

Bucciliero crossed the line first in the V1 LTA 200m ahead of Briton Martin Tweedie and Russia's Aleksei Egorov,

Cardoso da Silva was an emphatic winner in the V1 A 200m race finishing well clear of Oleksandr Hrechko of Ukraine and Hungarian Róbert Suba.

Making his World Championship debut, McGrath looked right at home as he recorded the fastest time of the year when powering to the V1 TA 200m crown in 48:596sec.

"I was way more nervous at the start," said McGrath, who finished ahead of Britain's Jonathan Young and Russian Victor Potanin.

"It had a bit more weight on the result than I'm used to, so I'm glad I pulled through.

"It's a special result and I'm happy and glad to be world champion."
