More than 15,000 spectators are expected to attend the Championships, due to begin on August 18, which, in the absence of a global competition for Para-athletes in 2014, is the season's focal point for Europe's top performers.

With no on-site spectator parking available, those heading to the Welsh city have been urged to use public transport to get to and from the main site in the Swansea University International Sports Village.

To aid this process, First Cymru will divert Services 2, 2B and 2C to operate via Swansea University and Singleton Hospital, with buses running at 15 minute intervals during the day, providing connections between Swansea Bus Station and the competition venue.

This will be complemented by the existing Metro service, which provides cross-city connections linking Swansea Railway Station, Swansea Bus Station, Swansea University and Singleton Hospital, the closest bus stop to the Sports Village.

Additional Park and Ride evening journeys will also run on the Metro until 9pm in order to give people attending the afternoon sessions a way of getting to and from the railway station and park and ride site after the events.

First Cymru has also employed four special ambassadors to work in Swansea for the duration of the Championships to assist those people visiting the city, ensuring a "seamless transport experience".

They will be assigned to key locations including Swansea University and Singleton Hospital and will complement the activities of the city's existing ambassadors and those working for First Great Western in and around the railway station.

Around 560 athletes from 36 countries are expected to descend on Swansea for the six days of competition.

Among them will be a number of home grown Welsh talents, including Nathan Stephens, the 2011 world champion in the F57-58 javelin, and Kyron Duke, who competed in both the javelin and shot put F40 competitions at London 2012.

Both took time this week to meet with representatives from the Organising Committee and transport partners First Cymru to welcome the transport arrangements being put in place.

"We are thrilled to be part of the team helping to make sure the IPC Championships is a real success," said Justin Davies, managing director of First Cymru.

"It is a real coup for Swansea to get to host this event, which have never before taken place in Great Britain.

"First Cymru will do all it can to encourage people to use public transport to get to and from the events, meeting their expectations of quick and simple transport, and we've been working hard with the organisers to make sure there is a seamless public transport solution in place."

Paul Thorburn, chair of the Swansea 2014 Organising Committee, added: "We are extremely pleased to be working side by side with First Cymru to deliver this event.

"Providing an outstanding experience to for athletes, spectators and visitors to the city has been a key priority for us and the arrangements that First Cymru have put in place will allow this to be realised.

"Great transport services are a major part of every world class event and Swansea 2014 is set to be the greatest IPC European Championships to date."
