The 35-year-old from Lagos, who has polio, lifted a total of 224 kilogramme to easily beat India's Rajinder Rehelu, who lifted180.5kg, while Malaysia's Jong Yee Khie won the bronze medal.

To the disappointment of the home crowd, Scotland's Michael Yule finished fourth and missed the opportunity to win his country's first ever Commonwealth Games medal in the sport.

Ibrahim's triumph continued the form he showed when winning the gold medal at the World Championships in Dubai earlier this year, and he said afterwards his next goal is winning a Paralympic gold medal at Rio 2016.

"I felt fine today and I'm very happy to pick up the gold, I had very good lifts," he said.

"I have to get back home quickly to train for Rio."

His victory followed an earlier triumph for compatriot Paul Kehinde, who beat fellow Nigerian Rolland Ezuruike in the lightweight division,

Bronze went to England's Ali Jawad, despite the fact the Englishman twice broke his own world record for the up to 59kg category, but was deemed third after his bodyweight was taken into account.

This is because the results were calculated by a formula to assess lifters who would usually compete separately but had been combined into the same weight division.
