Scotland and Malawi camaraderie

"Malawi celebrated a relationship with Scotland which stretches back 150 years by beating the host nation 62-35 at netball. Malawi had lost to New Zealand and Jamaica but built up a strong advantage in the first two periods of the match and were never in any danger from then on. "Its fantastic having the sportsmanship and friendship between the two countries is great " said Scottish captain Lesley Macdonald "We had a really competitive game on the court but it is off the court that actual friendship is all about."

"'Malawi is everybody's second team,' said Under Secretary of State For Scotland David Mundell. Glasgow Schoolgirl Martha Payne raised money to provide school meals in Malawi by starting a blog she realised that some people across the world don't go to school and don't get school dinners and she raised a phenomenal amount of money, it a great legacy to leave and long may it continue" said Scottish International Development Minister Hamza Yousaf. "The relationship with Malawi is phenomenally important the most important we have, it is built purely and entirely on compassion"he said.

"Monica Dzonzi, the UNICEF ambassador for Malawi who carried the Queen's baton at the start of the Glasgow 2014 relay, is set to visit Blantyre the birthplace of Scottish missionary and humanitarian David Livingstone at Blantyre on Wednesday. 'People always remember David Livingstone and the kind of work that he did back in Malawi,' she said. 'I call Scotland the warm heart of Europe as Malawi is the warm heart of Africa. We have that strong link.'"

Swimming review after six days of action

"Well as I file my last report from the Tollcross Centre here in Glasgow amid the clanking of TV gantries and camera poles being dismantled I will not forget the last five evenings I have spent here in a hurry. The swimming action has been a personal highlight of mine so far at these Games and the experience has been made all that much better by the packed houses that have greeted the athletes each night and the raucous support they have provided.

"The Scots have had something to cheer about as 10 medals have been won by home swimmers in total including three golds for Hannah Miley, Ross Murdoch and Libby Clegg. The home nation sit just behind South Africa and Canada on the swimming medal table but it is the big-two of England and Australia who are way out in front.

"England have amassed 28 medals that were highlighted by two golds for Fran Halsall and Benjamin Proud, while Siobhan-Marie O'Connor and Adam Peaty have announced their arrival on the international stage with Commonwealth titles - and with aplomb.

"But it is the Aussie machine that keeps on rolling as they top the medal table at a Commonwealth Games again. The green and gold brigade amassed more than twice as many medals as England with 57 in total including 19 gold, 21 silver and 17 bronze. The likes of James Magnussen, Daniel Tranter, Emily Seebohm, Leiston Pickett, Emma McKeon, Madison Elliott, Ben Treffers and the Campbell sisters of Cate and Bronte have all impressed on their way to becoming Commonwealth Games champions while the Aussie's had near total domination in the relay events. It is rather fitting that the next time an Australian swimmer tips their toe in a Commonwealth Games swimming pool it will be in the aptly named Gold Coast four years from now."

But remember, the Pacific nation could yet have another gold if Chika Amalaha, the Nigerian weightlifter whose positive test was announced today, is disqualified. Original silver medal winner Dika Toua would be upgraded to gold.

22:17 Jim Steacy's win in the hammer was the first Canadian triumph in that event in 76 years. There only other victory came at Sydney 1938, when George Sutherland took gold. Steacy also upgraded the silver medal he won at Melbourne 2006.

22:10 So, another exciting evening of athletics comes to an end. A good for Jamica, Canada and Kenya, and one of near misses for England with silver medals, albeit with some very good performances.

22:05 A home nations two-three in the men's hammer throw but gold goes to Canada's Jim Steacy.

The Canadian's second attempt proved the all-important throw as he finishes with a high of 74.16m.

England's Nicholas Miller finishes second on 72.99 with Scotland's Mark Dry in third.

21:57 Kenyan success in the women's 1500m as Faith Kibiegon wins gold.

Kibiegon finishes 4:08.94 to beat England's Laura Weightman to the line.

Canada's Kate Van Buskirk is just fractions behind in third.

"Nearly half-an-hour after the competition finished and the Papua New Guinea contingent are still in the Clyde Auditorium singing and dancing. The security staff are trying to clear them out on the basis that staff have to be allowed in to clean the arena. They respond by dragging him in as part of their choir. Even the most miserable Scottish jobsworth can't fail to smile at that."

21:44 Australia's Shelley Watts has taken to instagram to reflect on her shock victory over England's Natasha Jonas in the women's boxing earlier today. Here's what she had to say...

21:37 An update from the hammer throw now and Canada's Jim Steacy leads after the fourth attempt with a throw of 74.16.

England's Nicholas Miller is behind him with a best of 72.99 while Scotland's Mark Dry is in third on 71.64.

Two more English athletes sit fourth and fifth, Alex Smith and Amir Williamson.

"A disappointed Ribouem took a while to get over his defeat but his mood had picked up by the time of the medals ceremony, where appropriately Kari received his medal off Sports Minister Tkatchenko. Kari then celebrated by trying to lift both Ribouem and Mali while they stood on the medal podium. It was a pretty good attempt actually..."

21:33 What a finish at Tollcross!

Superb stuff at the pool in Tollcross as England pick up their second gold of the night after a dramatic finish in the men's 4x100m medley relay.

Adam Peaty and Adam Brown gave the English a sizeable lead in the second and third legs before another Adam, this time Barrett soared like a salmon into the water to take on the final run. However, the imposing presence of James Magnussen was chasing him down and following the final turn for home the Aussie began eating into the English lead as the everyone rose to their feet in the arena.

Amid deafening noise Barratt pumped and kicked like never before to touch home and break the Games record to boot.
Their time of 3:31:51 took almost two seconds off that set by Australia in 2010.South Africa were distant third.

21:20 Ribouem has one lift to retain his title adding a kilogram to the bar. He never looks likely to pull it off and collapses on his back. That is gold for Kari of Papua New Guinea.

He celebrates by embracing Paul Coffa, the godfather of lifting in the Pacific Islands. What a fantastic competition.

That is only the third gold medal won by Papua New Guinea since they made their debut at the Commonwealth Games in 1962. The first they won was by Geua Tau in the lawn bowls at Auckland 1990. They had to wait 16 years for their second, from Ryan Pini in the men's 100m butterfly at Melbourne in 2006.

Of course, the impending disqualification of Nigerian Chika Amalaha means Dika Toua is almost certain to be awarded the gold medal in the women's 53kg weightlifting. But that isn't official yet. Toua and Kari are cousins remember.

Relay double on the cards at the pool

21:19 Australia's women's 4x100m medley relay team have taken gold in a time of 3:56:23 to break their own Games record as Cate Campbell battled it out with England's Fran Halsall on the final leg.

Campbell had a slight advantage going into the final 100m but try as she might Halsall could not reel her in while Sandrine Mainville saw Canada home in third.

21:15 Kari responses by lifting 200kg only for the judges to declare it a 'no lift'. Papua New Guinea Sports Minister Tkatchenko is furious.

But he's soon on his feet celebrating after the jury of appeal reverse the decision and judge it a fair lift.

21:10 Approaching business end of 94kg weightlifting and Ribouem looking like the man to beat. Papua New Guinea's Steven Kukuna Kari really pulled one of the bag by lifting 195kg only for Ribouem to respond with an effort of 196kg. He celebrates his successful light by upper cutting the air and dancing around the stage.

21:06 Canada's Damian Warner wins the men's decathlon.

South Africa's Fredriech comes home first in the 1500m but Warner's 4:45.43 in fifth is enough for the overall gold. He finishes on 8282 points.

England's Ashley Byrant taks the silver with 8109 points while Grenada's Kurt Felix seals bronze on 8070.

21:01 The men's 1500m underway now. This is the final event of the decathlon remember...

20:59 We are now into the clean and jerk section of the 94kg weightlifting. Scottish hope Peter Kirkbride has just had a failure at 182kg and is about to have his second attempt. At the moment England's Owen Boxall is leading but the main contenders still have to come.

Kirkbride goes close on his second attempt at 182kg but cannot lock his knees. He seems spent on his third attempt and fails again. There will be no medal tonight for him.

20:51 At the end of the snatch Simplice Riouem, Australia's defending champion, is leading and looking good to retain his title. When he completed his lift of 153kg the Australian coaching staff celebrated like they'd taken the final English wicket at the MCG to win the Ashes.

20:50 Awesome stuff from defending champion Ryan Cochrane of Canada as he leads from the start to retain his 1,500m freestyle title finishing over four seconds clear of Australian Mack Horton.

Both men were streaks ahead of the rest at the midway point and it was a straight battle between the two but Cochrane showed his power and endurance by pulling away from Horton over the final 200m.

Wales' Daniel Jervis became an honorary Scot for the final 50m as the crowd roared him on in his battle for bronze with Jordan Harrison and that extra wee push made all the difference as he touched home just ahead of the chasing Aussie.

20:48 And it's another gold for Jamaica!

Andrew Riley comes in first with a time of 13.32, just fractions ahead of England's William Sharman.

Sharman almost had it but stumbled on the final hurdle to hand the win to the Jamaican.

Shane Brathwaite of Barbados takes the bronze.

There's no defending champion Adam Turner in this of course after he hit the first hurdle in the heat's this morning and was knocked out.

10:38 A Jamaican one, two, three in the women's 400m final!

Stephanie McPherson takes the win in 50.67 ahead of team mates Novlene Williams-Mills and Christine Day.

It was so close near the end but I knew my body was in good shape. I'm so so happy it was Kenya for one, two and three. I thank God for my victory. I'm happy I could win at my first Commonwealth Games.

20:25 The Kenyan one, two, three in tonight's 10,000m final was a first in the event for the nation and means that a Kenyan athlete has won the women's 10,000m in the last five Commonwealth Games.

"We are halfway through the programme on the final night of swimming here at Tollcross and as the Australian national anthem rings out during the medal ceremony for Daniel Tranter's win in the men's 200m individual butterfly, it is their Antipodean neighbours New Zealand who lead the gold medal count with two while England have one on the board in the form of Benjamin Proud. The Aussies will be confident of adding at least two more as they go in the 4x100m medley relays later."

20:15 Gold number two for Pascoe and three for New Zealand.

Six-time Paralympic and world champion Sophie Pascoe claims her second gold medal of the Games and New Zealand's second on the night after an awesome performance in the women's Para-sport 200m individual medley SM10 adds to Lauren Boyle's win earlier.

She was just under four seconds clear of silver medal winner Katherine Downie of Australia while Aurelie Rivard claims bronze.

Pascoe was still well outside her world record of 2:25:65 set on her way to gold at London 2012.

"Kirkbride fails at 145kg, however. Hopes are high among the largish Papua New Guinea contingent here, who include the country's Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko, that Steven Kukuna Kari can triumph. Interestingly, Kari is a cousin of Dika Toua, the lifter set to be upgraded to the gold medal in the women's 53kg following the positive test of Nigerian Chika Amalaha, which was announced earlier today.
Earlier, Tkatchenko had written on his Facebook page, following the announcement of Arnalaha's positive. 'Dika your hard and honest work has given you a chance now to receive the GOLD MEDAL Well done we are so proud of you..it clearly shows it never pays to cheat!! Dika that GOLD was always yours...you are our champion...

20:08 England's Olympic champion Greg Rutherford has followed a family tradition by qualifying for the final of the long jump at Hampden Park. His great grandfather Jock played for England at the same stadium against Scotland in 1908 before a world-record crowd of 121,452.

There were about 77,000 less people at Hampden today but Rutherford enjoyed the experience.

"The response of the crowd was absolutely unreal," he said. "It does feel like a home crowd."

And before any readers write in, yes it is confusing that England picked a player called Jock for a match against Scotland. But he was born in Northumberland and during a long career played for a number of English clubs, including Arsenal, where he won three First Divison titles, and Newcastle United, where he played in a remarkable five FA Cup finals.

20:05 We're through nine of 10 event in the men's decathlon now with just the 1500m left to go.

Canada's Damian Warner still sits first with 7,636 points. He's followed by Grenada's Kurt Felix on 7,437 and the English pairing of Ashley Byrant and John Lane on 7,418 and 7,333 respectively.

19:59 Guess who's back?

Daniel Tranter beats his chest after taking gold for Australia in the men's 200m individual medley breaking the Games record of Delhi 2010 champion James Goddard to finish in a time of 1:57:83.

Daniel Wallace came into the arena clad in his kilt to a raucous reception and he hasn't disappointed by taking silver and Scotland 's first medal on the night with South Africa's Chad le Clos in third.

"Talk about what a difference a couple of hundred metres make. I've moved from the SSE Hydro and the gymnastics, where it was all about grace and beauty, to the Clyde Auditorium for the 94kg men's weightlifting where power and strength is the order of the day. Place is heaving with Scottish fans hoping Peter Kirkbride can one better than four years ago in Delhi, where he won the silver medal. Early signs are good as he's just lifted 142kg in the snatch with such ease he was able to stick his tongue out."

19:55 Gold for Jamaica's Kimberly Williams in the women's triple jump!

The Jamaican had already sealed gold with her opening jump of 14.09m but jumps a 14.21m in her final attempt to really cement her victory.

England's Laura Samuel finishes with silver while Ayanna Alexander of Trinidad and Tobago takes the bronze.

19:48 A brilliantly run race by Joyce Chepkirui in the women's 10,000m it looked like the Kenyans were teasing the field at the front as the made break after break across the distance. Kiplagat must have thought she'd won it but her team mate timed the sprint to perfection.

19:43 Georgia Davies takes gold in the women's 50m backstroke to follow up compatriot Jazz Carlin's silver earlier. Davies broke her own Games record set in the heats by clocking 27:56 while England's Lauren Quigley takes silver and Canadian Brooklyn Snodgrass the bronze.

What a start for the Welsh Dragons and three races in Australia have yet to register a win.

That's not often been said these past few days at Tollcross.

19:41 The cheers kept ringing out in at Hampden as the crowd had eyes for the battle for fourth and fifth.

England's Kate Avery just beats Beth Potter of Scotland to the line by a mere tenth of a second.

19:40 It's Chepkirui who takes it.

Florence Kiplagat makes a break on the final bend and looks to have broken clear but Joyce Chepkirui reels her in and pips gold on the line.

Emily Chebet takes bronze.

19:38 The final lap now at Hampden Park and the Kenyans are leagues ahead. The only question now; which one will take the gold?

England's Benjamin Proud takes his second gold medal at Glasgow 2014 as he powers to victory in the men's 50m freestyle to add to his 50m breaststroke win from Friday night.

The Australians Cameron McEvoy and James Magnussen take silver and bronze respectively.

19:33 It's a Kenyan one, two, three now as Chebet, Kiplagat and Chepkirui make a break. Beth Potter of Scotland and Kate Avery of England are 50m back in fourth and fifth but it looks like it's going to be a clean sweep here for Kenya.

19:28 Huge cheers at Hampden as Scotand's Beth Potter takes to the front in the women's 10,000m final. There's a group of nine athletes leading this race as they come around to the 6,800m mark.

Gymnastics medals presentation

19:24 A wonderful moment in the medals ceremony for the men's team gymnastics, as England's Sam Oldham is carried onto the podium by his team mates after arriving on crutches. He was injured earlier but won't be too upset. He's just been awarded a Commonwealth Games gold medal!

19:19 We're off and running on the gold medal trail in the pool and the first medal of the evening is going Down Under but not to Australia. New Zealand's Lauren Boyle put in a storming last 100m to take the women's 400m freestyle gold.

She breaks England's Rebecca Adlington's Games record of 4:05:68 in the process as she touches home in a time of 4:04:47 ahead of Jazz Carlin of Wales and Australian Bronte Barratt.

19:16 Just four laps later and that gaps been closed as Scotland's Beth Potter leads the chasing pack of Elinor Kirk of Wales and England's Kate Avery and Sonia Samuels back into the breakaway group

19:09 And there's already a massive divide between the African runners and those from closer to home as Uganda's Celementine Mukasakindi pushes the pace after just 400m. She's followed by Kenya's Florence Kiplagat, Joyce Chepkirui and Emily Chebet and Ugandans Toroitich Chebet and Vanis Chemutai

The sixth and final night of pool action is set to get underway here at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre and there are eight sets of medals up for grabs in four women's and men's events. The big question as always is who can put it up to the Australians as the green and gold machine has been in fine working order over the past five days.
On the women's the Aussies will be defending their 4x100 medley relay crown while the men will be doing likewise. Meanwhile, in individual events, Ryan Cochrane of Canada is the only defending champion in action as he will be looking to retain the men's 1,500m freestyle title.
The home fans' hopes will be pinned on Hannah Miley in the women's 400m freestyle and Stephen Milne and Daniel Wallace in the men's 1,500m freestyle and 200m individual medley respectively.

Gold medals in gymnastics and wrestling as evening action begins

19:06 Scottish Commonwealth Games and Sports Minister Shona Robison is presenting the medals in the gymnastics. Was she hoping for some Scottish success I wonder? After the crowd clap along to "With A Little Help from My Friends" by The Beatles, fitting considering the English success I suppose, a member of the Australian team, who else, leads the crowd in an enthusiastic rendition of "Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi".

"At the SSE Hydro for the finals of the women's team gymnastics and the DJ appears to have a different play-list to the rest of his colleagues in other venues. The Proclaimers or Franz Ferdinand have yet to be heard. Instead we are being treated to Queen, the Spice Girls, The Clash and Soul Bossa Nova, better known as the theme tune for Austin Powers. We even had a bit of Tchaikovsky to accompany the 'Weegie Wave', Glasgow's version of the Mexican Wave. I am wondering if we do not hear The Proclaimers 'I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)' at least once before the end of evening whether it will invalidate the result as, I am pretty certain, it is illegal for it not to be played at a Glasgow 2014 venue."

19:01 Action underway now in athletics. As Trinidad and Tobago's Ayanna Alexander moves up into third in the women's triple jump behind Jamaica's Kimberly Williams and England's Laura Matthews, it's time to focus on the track with the women's 10,000m ready to get underway.

18:52 England's second gold medal of the day in team artistic gymnastics has been confirmed.

The quintet of Becky Downie, Hannah Whelan, Ruby Harrold, Claudia Fragapane and Kelly Simm amass a total of 167.555 to beat Australia, who place second, and Wales, who continue their strong gymnastics form with third.

18:46 Erica Wiebe of Canada breaks the Indian dominance on the mat by winning the women's under 75kg freestyle wrestling. She beat Ali Annabel of Cameroon in the final, while Blessing Onyebuchi of Nigeria takes bronze.

"After yet more trauma on the buses, I've finally made it to Hampden Park in anticipation for an exciting night of action on both the track and field. On the field at the moment we have the men's decathlon javelin throw event where Damian Warner is looking to hold onto his lead atop the overall standings. Chasing him is Grenada's Kurt Felix who, incidently just threw a 62.08 to sit ahead of him in this particular event. Behind these is a group of four, including two Welsh athletes, who will be battling for the bronze. The final race for the decathlon is, ofcourse the 1500m which gets underway at 21:00. Elsewhere we have the women's triple jump finals which are just beginning in the pit, whilst the women's 10,000m, 400m and 1500m are all taking place this evening. There's also finals in the men's 110m hurdles and hammer throw."

Shooting, weightlifting and wrestling medals action

18:31 Jasmine Ser of Singapore wins the women's 50m rifle 3 positions shooting with a Games record total of 449.1 points for the final shooting title of the Games.

Silver goes to Jen McIntosh of England to continue their strong day on the rifle range. Lajja Gauswami of India takes bronze.

18:24 A dominant day continues for Indians on the mat as they secure victories in all three gold medal matches so far. After a fairly slow start, their charge up the medals table begins... Rather like the Russians at the Summer Olympics I feel, who always seem to have a lot of their strongest events in the final days of competition.

18:19 Sushil Kumar wins gold for India in the men's freestyle under 74kg final after beating Qamar Abbas in the final. It's fairly rare to see an Indian v Pakistan sporting rivalry away from the cricket field. But Kumar was always likely to be too strong here. The double Olympic medallist dominates their final to win by forfeit in the first round.

Mike Grundy of England and Melvin Bibo of Nigeria won the two bronze medals.

What will BK do next?

It's the last appearance of BK the inflatable Kangaroo at tonight's swimming. BK, or the Boxing Kangaroo, is the official mascot of the Australian swimming team and has met with the likes of the Wales' aka Will and Kate during his time here in Glasgow.
BK, who is a big hit with the kids back in Oz, is looked after during his time at the pool by a "zookeeper", who is generally a rookie in the Australian swimming team.
Undoubtedly the biggest question drifting through the Tollcross stands this evening is, "what next for BK?" with rumours surfacing of a surprise appearance on the podium, or a quick dip in the pool.

18:12 A first medal for Fiji as well courtesy of weightlifting Apolonia Vaivai. Remember, the Pacific Island were only reinstated back into the Commonwealth, and allowed to compete in the Games, in March, and their netball and rugby sevens teams were still not allowed as the qualification deadline had already passed.

The nation had been suspended since 2006 due to political problems back home. Gary Anderson's report on them being reinstated can be read here.

That is Fiji's first medal since they secured rugby sevens bronze at Melbourne 2006. Could they have upset the New Zealand v South Africa party if they had played here at Ibrox, I wonder?

The team will be gunning for a first Fijian Olympic medal at Rio 2016.

18:06 England have some catching up to do as far as the medals table is concerned as well. They are two golds and 10 medals behind Australia at the moment.

Only five golds separates the next five countries however. Scotland are still third, but Canada, India, New Zealand and South Africa are chasing fast. India are certainly being helped by the start of the wrestling events.

Gold medals in weightlifting, wrestling and gymnastics

17:52 Marie-Eve Beauchemin-Nadeau of Canada has won the under 75kg weightlifting. Mary Opelage of Samoa and Apolonia Vaivai of Fiji took the silver and bronze medals.

17:44 After the injury for Sam Oldham earlier, English gymnastics team mate Rebecca Downie rolls her foot as he pulls off a double pike in the vault. But the team are leading after the latest rotation. Ahead of Wales and Scotland so a home nations 1-2-3 at the moment.

"Of all the sports Great Britain has improved in, in recent years in, their gymnastics progression has been among the most remarkable. When I first started following Olympic sport, the only gymnast from these shores who was even vaguely competitive on the world stage was Beth Tweddle. Now there is a huge pool of talent and they are beginning to rival even the like of the United States, Russia and China at the biggest events. And here, even when split up into the different home nations, they are dominating."

17:37 Vinesh wins second wrestling gold for India in women's 48kg division. Yana Rattigan of England has to settle for silver after being beaten despite fighting back to 11-8 down with 30 seconds left. Cameroon's Rebecca Muambo takes one of the bronze medals, while Jasmine Mian of Canada wins the other.

17:28 The action is hotting up now in the gymnastics as the England team take to the beam. Both Ruby Harrold and Hannah Whelan have little stumbles on their dismount, and that will cost them some key points.

English shooting success

17:20 Daniel Rivers became the first Englishman to win the 50m rifle 3 positions in 28 years after triumphing earlier on this afternoon. The last victory also came on Scottish soil, when Malcolm Cooper won at Edinburgh 1986.

Gagan Narang of India, the bronze medal winner today, has won the last two editions, but he did manage his 10th all time Games podium finish. Eight of those have been on the top step of the podium.

Gold for India in first wrestling final

17:07 Amit Amit Kumar of India has won the men's 57kg freestyle wrestling gold medal. He defeats Ebikweminomo Welson of Nigeria in the final. Craig Pilling of Wales takes bronze.

16:56 Huge cheers as Scotland's gymnasts compete in the floor event here. It's certainly a more complicated sport to get your head around live than on television, where you can focus on one event, but there is nothing in sport more visually spectacular than a gymnast vaulting at speed through the air.

Scotland are aiming to match their male counterparts, who won their first ever men's team medal, a silver, earlier.

16:48 Sushil Kumar of India, who has won bronze and silver medals at the last two Olympic Games, is through to the men's 74kg freestyle wrestling final on the first day of grappling action here.

The defending champion is one his country's best known Olympic athletes and, interestingly, will be up against Pakistan's Qamar Abbas in the final.

16:39 Across the short path from the Hydro Arena to the SECC Precinct, women's boxing has got underway a few hours earlier than yesterday. And there has already been a major shock as England's Natasha Jonas lost via a split decision to Shelley Watts of Australia.

That may have opened the draw up for Charlene Jones of Wales who just dominated her opening clash against Hansika Arachchi of Sri Lanka.

"A slightly strange situation in the gymnastics because, although the medals have already been sewn up, there are still male gymnasts competing from some of the smaller nations (see 14:22) But there is all to play for in the women's competition as England look to match the achievements of their male counterparts. Rebecca Downie, Claudia Fragapane, Ruby Harrold, Hannah Whelan and Emma Simm will go on the beam and the floor with the best three out of four scores to count towards the team total. Wales are leading of the teams who have completed their four routines but Australia and Scotland, as well as England, are still to come."

Double rifle gold for England

16:29 A brilliant afternoon for England at Barry Buddon has continued with gold for Daniel Rivers in the 50m rifle three positions. The 23-year-old rising star pushed the more experienced Indian duo Sanjeev Rajput and Gagun Narung into the minor medal positions.

16:20 England's David Luckman has claimed his second gold medal of the Games in the full-bore Queen's Prize individual event. The 38-year-old has already won the pairs competition, and triumphed on his own ahead of Canada's Jim Paton, with fellow Englishman and pairs partner Pareg Patel taking bronze.

On a sadder note, Jersey's 24-year wait for a Commonwealth Games medal continues after Barry Le Cheminant and Daniel Richardson finished down 7th and 16th position. They had been considered outside contenders to reach the podium in the same event Colin Mallett won the the island's only gold medal, at Auckland 1990.

History made in cross country mountain biking

16:16 New Zealander Anton Cooper's winning margin of three seconds over Samuel Gaze in the cross country mountain biking earlier was the smallest ever winning margin in the event at the Commonwealth Games, either in a male or female race.

Gate, aged 18, became the youngest ever Games mountain bike medal winner, while Cooper, who is just one year older, became the youngest champion. It also marked the first ever gold for New Zealand in Commonwealth Games mountain-biking.

Usain Bolt meets Prince Harry

16:09 Remember Prince Harry is one of the very few people who has managed to get the better of Usain Bolt in a race. He famously finished ahead of him, albeit with a slight false start, in a head-to-head race during a tour to the Caribbean in 2012.

16:04 Sprinter Usain Bolt has had what he described as an "honourable meeting" with Prince Harry this afternoon. He and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have made the most of their time in Glasgow, visiting a number of venues as well as the Athletes' Village today.

"My first experience of live weightlifting was the women's 53kg competition on Friday. As I wrote at the time, it was a competition I enjoyed hugely. A great atmosphere, a simple and easy to understand sport, made all the more exciting by the music, announcer and the close nature of the finish. But when the 16-year-old Nigerian won gold, although it was a great story, I remember immediately blocking out nagging doubts about her rapid emergence. For news of her positive test to now be confirmed is therefore a major blow, that shows like, so many other sports, weightlifting still has a dark cloud hanging over it which is detracting from an otherwise exciting event."

14:03 Scotland is still waiting for its first podium place today but is already guaranteed its most successful Commonwealth Games in history following yesterday's gold medals for Alex Marshall and Paul Foster in the lawn bowls and Libby Clegg on the track at Hampden Park, taking their total of medals to 33, 13 of which are gold.

13:50 In any sporting competition one usually finds what we in the media like to call a 'Group of Death'. The men's bowls singles competition is no different here in Glasgow with section A involving the likes of England's defending Commonwealth champion Sam Tolchard, six-time Commonwealth Games medallist Rob Weale and 2011 World Champion of Champions gold medallist Aron Sherriff of Australia.

Tolchard got his bid to defend the singles title off to the best of starts at Kelvingrove today as he beat Weale 21-12 in the pairs early morning encounter.

The result places him second in the group behind Sherriff who beat Niue's Dalton Tagelagi his opening fixture on Sunday.

13:25 Nigerian weightlifter Chika Amalaha, who became the first athlete here in Glasgow to fail a drugs test after winning gold in the women's 53kg competition, told reporters after her victory that her next target was gold at Rio 2016.

The 16-year-old indicated that she was already working on her strategy for the Olympics the same way she did for Glasgow, with the five Ps of "Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance".

"Before I landed in Glasgow for this Commonwealth Games, I prepared very well. I always worked with my five Ps, which is 'proper preparation prevents poor performance," she said.

"So, I had to work hard to prevent poor performance and I worked for the gold and for the record.

"The next thing is for me to be determined, discipline and dedicated, which is what I will use to work for the next Olympics."

A bit ironic really considered the ensuing results of her doping test which has seen her provisionally suspended from the Games pending tomorrow's B sample.

Chika, a word of advice for the future. Make sure your "Proper Preparation" doesn't involve taking any banned substances, and "drugs-free" should maybe added to your list of "determined, discipline and dedication."
