A political sports commission had been set up last month to study the viability of Mexico bidding to host the Olympics for the first time since 1968.

The potential bid reportedly centred around Guadalajara, which unsuccessfully attempted to host the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics last year in a contest won by Buenos Aires.

The city in the west of the country had hosted the 2011 Pan American and Parapan American Games and is set to stage the 2017 World Aquatics Championships, and a 2024 bid would presumably have taken advantage of many already existing venues.

But former swimmer Felipe Munoz Kapamas, President of the Sports Commission in the Chamber of Deputies, winner of an Olympic gold medal in the 200 metres breaststorke at Mexico City 1968, has now concluded a bid is not feasible because of the lack of suitable economic or infrastructure conditions.

Mexico remains the second largest economy in Latin America but has experienced slower growth in recent months and also remains locked in a viscous battle against drugs cartels.

Although many cities are still being considered in the race for 2024, many are also withdrawing as the number of credible contenders remains fairly minimal.

Toronto, Kazan and St Petersburg have been other cities to abandon reported attempts earlier this year, leaving Paris and several cities in the United States as the leading candidates, although Doha and Rome are others who remain keen.

Durban has also been muted as a possible contender, although the fact they were announced earlier this week as one of two candidates for the 2022 Commonwealth Games may mean a 2024 bid is left on the back-burner.

The race does not officially get underway until next year, with the host city to be chosen two years later in 2017.
