Non Stanford has been named Female Triathlete of the Year at a special awards ceremony in Birmingham ©British TriathlonNovember 23 - Non Stanford and Jonathan Brownlee have been named British Triathlon Elite Triathletes of the Year at the 2013 awards dinner in Birmingham today. 
Following a successful year for Stanford, which saw her crowned women's world champion at Hyde Park in September, the 24-year-old picked up the top awards at the ceremony, which also included the Olympic Athlete of the Year title and Peter Holmes Award for Inspirational Performance in International Competition. 
 
"It's a massive honour to win," she said.

"I've sat in the audience for the last few years and I've been in awe of the athletes who have received this award.

"So to be on the other side and be the recipient is a testimony to hard work and perseverance, and it's also a continued testimony of the quality of the team up in Leeds."

London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Brownlee took the men's award after narrowly missing out on the International Triathlon Union's (ITU) world title earlier this year, finishing second behind Spain's Francisco Javier Gómez Noya following a sprint finish at Hyde Park.

Eight other British world champions were crowned across multisport disciplines, including the Female and Male Elite Duathletes of the Year, Lucy Gossage and Richard Horton, and the Female and Male Elite Junior Triathletes of the Year, Georgia Taylor-Brown and Marc Austin.

"Following on from the Olympic year was always going to be a challenge but we've risen to it in terms of the performance delivery of our senior women and the juniors in particular," British Triathlon performance director Brendan Purcell said.

"Next season there's a big focus on the Commonwealth Games, and qualification for the 2016 Olympics starts.

"Our Paratriathlon programme is also evolving all the time, but we've maintained our position as the world number one team this year."

This successful year for British Triathlon also saw participation in the sport increase by 10 per cent, according to initial participation data.
