The 2008 Beijing gold medallist, 29, lost his unbeaten international record when he finished fourth at London 2012 at the same venue.

But on this occasion he beat London 2012 bronze medallist Aleksey Chuvashev by over six seconds, with fellow Briton Andy Houghton third.

"It was tough racing conditions all the way down but I showed good strength and put together a good race and I'm really pleased with the result," Aggar told British Rowing afterwards.

"About halfway through I noticed I was edging through and after that I felt confident and strong.

"Last year I underperformed and it is special to win here after the disappointment of last year and it makes up for it a little."

Meanwhile, Britain's mixed coxed four beat Ukraine in a head-to-head race.

London gold medallists Pamela Relph - whose sister, Monica, was competing for Britain in the women's quadruple scull - and Naomi Riches joined newcomers James Fox and Oliver Hester - plus cox Oli James - to claim another title.

The home crew took a commanding lead over Ukraine early on, and with clear water quickly established between the two boats, the British crew continued to press home their advantage to win by the huge margin of 27 seconds.

"We got away from them quite quickly and then just held off," said Relph.

"It wasn't our best row by any means, there is still a lot to work on but I think to deal with those conditions with the new crew that we have was encouraging.

"It has been a special feeling to be coming to Dorney this week, reliving the feelings we had from last year, and competing in front of a home crowd."
