The Olympic Parklands and Public Realm project took the top industry prize, the President's Award, which is presented each year to the best landscape architecture scheme of the year.

The prize went to LDA Design with Arup, Atkins and Hargreaves Associates – the design team behind the Olympic Park.

The Olympic Park also won the Peter Youngman Award, with the prize going to the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA).

"It is rare that a project can attract so many superlatives and such a consensus as to its achievements, whilst also providing practical lessons in restoration, sustainability, regeneration and the art of the possible," said Landscape Institute President Sue Illman.

"In selecting this project for the President's Award I salute the skill, determination and commitment of the project team in delivering the Olympic Park that inspired us all and made the country proud."

Arup's team of landscape architects, engineers and specialists, led by Tom Armour, collaborated with LDA Design, Hargreaves Associates and Atkins on the development of the Olympic Park to transform derelict land into one of the largest urban parks in Europe.

Meanwhile, the Peter Youngman Award is given to a project or individual that has made an outstanding contribution to landscape architecture.

Now in its sixth consecutive year, the Landscape Institute Awards is managed by the royal chartered body for landscape architects and recognises outstanding examples of work in the industry.
