sambo world cupNovember 29 - Kazan is hosting the University Sambo World Cup at the Ak Bars Wrestling Palace this weekend, which will act as another test event in preparation for the 2013 Summer Universiade.


The tournament, which runs from tomorrow until December 3, will welcome 241 athletes under the age of 27 years old from 41 countries, including the United States, Venezuela, Ukraine, Italy, Israel, Germany, Turkmenistan, Pakistan and Korea.


The home team includes two female representatives from Tatarstan – Anastasia Povyazina and Yekaterina Yelizarova – while the men competing under the Russian flag will be the national champion in the 74 kg weight category, Ali Kurzhev, and winner of the World Cup stages, Vladimir Balykov, competing in the 68 kg category.


The tournament features 18 medal events – 18 gold, 18 silver and 36 bronze medals – with winners and top achievers in individual competitions being awarded medals and diplomas, and winning teams receiving cups and diplomas.


Coaches will also be honoured with diplomas.

Sambo will feature on the Summer Universiade programme for the first time at Kazan 2013 as an optional sport.
