The concept comes out of the Southeast Asian Games Organising Committee's community programme, "Make-a-NILA".

The programme gives the public the opportunity to play a unique role in the victory ceremonies at the Games, allowing creators of the toys to write personalised messages of encouragement and support to the athletes.

Lim Teck Yin, chairman of Singapore 2015, believes the programme highlights their commitment to engaging the public in the SEA Games, a biennial multi-sport event involving participants from the current 11 countries of Southeast Asia

"With each stitch and embellishment, you show your support for the Games, creating a one-of-a-kind mascot, a heartfelt gift for each medallist at the Games," he said. 

"Hopefully, each participant who makes a NILA can get a chance of being part of the victory ceremonies at the Games, and present his or her creation to the winning athlete."

Team Singapore's Chef de Mission Nicholas Fang echoed his sentiments stating that "Make-a-NILA will make Singaporeans feel like they play a part in this SEA Games, instead of just showing up to support Team Singapore".

He added: "By making this mascot, they are also embracing a little bit of history and culture."

The SEA Games are due to be held from June 5 to 16.
