Top officials from the GCC Olympic Committees pose for a group photograph during their meeting in Kuwait City ©Kuwait Olympic CommitteePreparations for major events next year dominated the 82nd meeting of the Executive Bureau of the Heads of Olympic Committees of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) held in Kuwait City today.


Among the events reviewed was the 4th GCC Women's Games, due to take place in Oman between March 8 and 18.

It was confirmed that it feature 10 sports - athletics, basketball, bowling, chess, equestrian, handball, shooting, tennis and volleyball, along with track and field events for athletes with special needs. 

There was also an update on the 2nd GCC Games scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabian city Dammam from October 17 to 27.

Members at the meeting, chaired by Obaid bin Zayed Al Anzi, secretary general of the Kuwait Olympic Committee, and held in the presence of Dr. Abdullah bin Aqlah Al Hashim, assistant secretary general for Human and Environment Affairs at the GCC Secretariat General, were also briefed on the 2nd GCC Beach Games set to be held in Doha from April 3 to 16.

The Games in the Qatari capital had originally been scheduled to be held in October this year but was postponed.

It is now due to feature seven sports - 3x3 basketball, football, handball, open water swimming, rafting, sailing and volleyball. 

"The meeting discussed the draft GCC sports development strategy, a proposal to establish a GCC sports dispute resolution body, the draft budgets of Organising Committees and plan of action for 2015," said Abdulrahman Askar, secretary general of the Bahrain Olympic Committee.
