A new multi-purpose sports hall has opened in Trashigang ©OCAA new multi-purpose sports hall has been opened by Royal Representative and Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) President Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuk in Trashigang.

The arena, costing an estimated BTN24 million (£243,000/$380,000/€309,000) was funded by the Royal Government of Bhutan with contributions from the Olympic Council of Asia, under its Olympasia Project.

It was constructed with the aim of encouraging youth engagement in sport and helping raise standards in an Asian country which made its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 1984 but has yet to win a medal.

The facility, in the town to the east of capital Thimphu, is designed to maximise the usage of space, with local administrators earmarking space for the facility, despite the scarcity of free land, in view of its growing youth population and overall benefit to the community.

Among the sprots to be played there will be basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and taekwondo, the four sports found to be the country's most popular in a 2010 survey.

It will also be used for other recreational and community events.

Bhutan was one of eight participating nations that failed to win a medal at the Asian Games in Incheon earlier this year.

Recent training camps have been held this month by the Bhutan Basketball Federation and the Bhutan Table Tennis Federation in Trashigang with the aim of boosting performances and encouraging new participants.
