More than 100 students participated in the inaugural Uganda Olympic Values Debate Championship ©Uganda Olympic CommitteeGalaxy International School in Jinja has won the senior debate at the first ever Olympic Values Debate Championship in Uganda.

The event, hosted by GEMS Cambridge International School at its Butabika campus, saw more than 100 students from 25 schools across the nation competing for the titles under the theme of "Olympic Values and the Spirit of Sport: Redefining our Physical Education and Sports Programmes".

While Galaxy International School took the honours for students aged 14 years old and over, GEMS Cambridge International School Kampala won the junior debates for those aged below 13 years of age.

Elsewhere, Patience Ayesiga from St Joseph's Secondary School in Nsambya was the day's best speaker, Michael Okea from St Mary's College Kisubi was the best male speaker and Lalani Aisha from GEMS Cambridge International School was the best female speaker in the junior debate.

William Blick, President of the Uganda Olympic Committee, said the event will now be held annually, and stressed the importance of using such events to spread the message of sport and the Olympic values, which include respect, excellence and friendship.

This Olympic Values Debate Championship is part of the Olympic Schools Programme and the Uganda Olympic Committee's Olympic Values Literacy Initiative, which aims to educate as many young people in the country as possible.

Other activities set to take place include a literature contest, an art and sport contest and quizzes.
