Former Ghana Olympic Committee President Yaw Nkansa-Gyane has died at the age of 87 ©GOCFormer Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President Yaw Nkansa-Gyane has died at the age of 87, it has been announced.


Nkansa-Gyane, a medical doctor who led the GOC between 1985 and 1990, died on January 12 but details of his death have only just been revealed.

he is due to be buried in Ghanaian capital Accra on Saturday (February 21).

He was part of Ghana's delegation at four Olympics, Tokyo in 1964, Munich 1972, Montreal 1976 and Los Angeles 1984. 

Besides his work with the GOC, he was also vice-president of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA), as it was then called, between 1974 and 1986.

Nkansa-Gyane was also a qualified international boxing judge and an honorary member of the AIBA's Medical Commission. 

He was the founding chairman of the Ghana Association of Sports Medicine.

"It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of Dr. Nkansa-Gyane, a great sports icon who contributed immensely to Ghana and the Olympic Movement for over 30 years," said Richard Akpokavie, secretary general of the GOC. 

"His contribution to the development of amateur boxing, tennis and the medical field cannot be overemphasised, and will be remembered for a long time.

"Our hearts go out to his family, friends and the entire sports community as we have lost a great leader."
