Held in conjunction with the Free State Sports Confederation, the Camp delved into effective communication skills, leadership values and self-worth as a way of encouraging young girls and women to take up influential positions in sport.

The participants also had a chance to be educated on sexually transmitted diseases, anti-doping and high performance centre programmes, among other topics.

Running under the theme, "Bridging the gap and growing together", the initiative's main purpose was to continue to help overcome the barriers that prohibit women and girls from actively engaging in all aspects of sport.

Around 80 participants from District Sports Confederations, schools and the civil society sector attended the event

The pioneer project was held in November last year, hosted by both the Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and Northern Cape Sports Confederation, and proved a success.

Deputy President of SASCOC and chairperson of the Women in Sport Commission, Hajera Kajee, said: "We are pleased that we have managed to host the second edition of the Women and Girls' Camp following the success of the pilot event in the Northern Cape last year.

"As the Sports Confederation, we continue with our quest to create an environment that gives women an equal opportunity to participate and become good leaders in sport.

A statement on the SASCOC website added: "Once again thank you to the team who made this event a success and we hope all participants took home with them great lessons that they will also share with their colleagues in the province."
