Under this sports diplomacy, the Tanzanian government will send athletes earmarked for the 2014 Commonwealth Games to China, Turkey, South Africa and Ethiopia for training.

Bayi applauded the work of the agreement but felt it would be more beneficial to the nation if up and coming youths were given this opportunity to train outside of the country as a way of investing in the future of Tanzania.

"It's good that the Government has started a sports diplomacy that will help to improve sports in the country, but it will be very important and meaningful if the youth and upcoming athletes are given the chance to train abroad where they will be exposed to modern equipment and top coaches", said Bayi, the former world record holder for the 1500 metres and mile.

He claimed athletes given the opportunity to undertake these government sponsored training excursions will be of more benefit to the country at the 2015 All Africa Games and Rio 2016 Olympic Games, as opposed to the Commonwealth Games which are just four months away.

He said it was imperative for the associations to look into the future of sport in the country and focus on development, rather than just focus on instant results.

Bayi confirmed that the TOC has received names of 40 athletes earmarked by the Athletics Tanzania (AT) to train abroad on the Government sponsorship, but declined to disclose their names saying it is not its mandate.

Other athletes who stand to benefit from the programme include judokas, boxers and table tennis players.
